No personal experience, but here's one place you can start looking.
I don't know if it is true or not, but the comment one person made about compressed cardboard would make me want to check this out before buying however. http://www.styleforum.net/t/337201/barker/0_100

I just ordered a pair of shoes which in my opinion are the perfect trifecta:
EG Midnight navy crup (cordovan) Dainite sole I hope to have them the first part of next week.

There's a big difference between Barker and a pair of bespokes. I would stick with some middle to higher end RTW (Ready to Wear), then move on to some MTO (Made to Order), before graduating to some bespoke shoes. Might want to try a pair of some Crockett and Jones or Alfred Sargent first. Then try a pair of Vass, Edward Green, or John Lobb next. Don't forget to try some Saint Crispin's as well.

Church are probably at the top end of mass produced shoes out of Northampton. Loake etc just a shade under these but nearly all made in Northampton and honestly the build quality not much different between any of them...Next step up for real 'Bench Made' shoes would be Trickers (royal family shoe supliers for generations) and Id suggest Oliver Sweeney.

dddrees-thanks for the suggestions. I'll go slow. I'm not sure all the makers referred to in this thread are easily available here in my part of the States anyway, which is probably a good thing!

Hardly any are available where I live either. However by using the following resource I have been able to research and purchase almost my entire shoe collection via the internet. By establishing certain sizes with certain shoe manufactures and then using these sizes to transfer them to lasts for other shoe manufactures. How far or what you decide to do is of course entirely up to you. But the following is certainly a good reference as to the type of things that are available. There are specific threads here for most of the English shoemakers as well as others to include Italian, Budapest, and Hungary. http://www.styleforum.net/f/5/classic-menswear Good hunting.

nothing pleases me more than fine English shoes
fresh in... C&Js... I love this brand. The quality is unreal and the comfort factor 10/10. I can't fault their products. I even think the price is fair for what you get in terms of quality and product longevity.

Any opinions on the JL Camborne (double monk) vs the JL Lopez (loafer)?
I can't decide. I don't wear loafers with a suit but may wear them when slightly dressed down (odd jacket, wool or khaki trousers depending on the season, usually a tie). I own a pair of Church's Becketts (single monk strap) and love them. Ordered a pair of Hughleys (sp?) and they looked amazing but I have a high instep and even though the shoe fit I could not buckle the aft strap. I've been a very satisfied Church's customer for many years and was frustrated that the shoes didn't fit. I've tried on JL Double Monks and have not had this problem. Do you think a pair of Double monk straps are interchangeable with a pair of loafers? Or should I go for the Double monks as I may be able to pair them with a suit? Thank you for weighing in.. |

JL monks.... I only have the single..
As Dan points out, works best with chinos of some description. i find they do not work with jeans at all... they are so comfortable they will make you cry... mine..

Double monks for twice the fun.
John Lobb shoes are so comfortable because the leather they use is the most supple you'll ever find.

I rarely wear jeans. And if I do it's generally a very casual occasion. So, are the double monks more appropriate than the loafers when wearing grey wool trousers and a blazer or jacket?

I wouldn't say they are more appropriate, it's just another option.

Looking good Dave.
I have yet to try anything from Trickers, but I have given thought to one of their boots a couple of times. They certainly have some colorful options available.

Dan, I've got a pair of brown leather wingtips with leather sole, I wear them 2-3 times a week, how often should I treat them with shoepolish?
