Why does WG sell for higher on secondary market?

I originally wanted and asked for a RG Daytona OF meteorite, my AD came through but with a WG. Obviously I picked it up and I love the watch, have had it for almost a year now. It’s actually great how under the radar WG is, and the WG works so well with this dial configuration.

I’ve been surprised that secondary prices are higher on WG though, it’s quite a bit more on the secondary market compared to YG and RG. Not that it really matters cause I’m keeping this watch, but it is a curiosity to me.

What do people think? Why does WG sells for more than YG and RG?

Congratulations! A very nice watch indeed!
WG is a neutral colour and more versatile. A watch like yours in WG can be worn more regularly, but a RG/YG option will be more eye-catching and less suitable for day to day use, although a meteorite Daytona can hardly be classified as a daily watch haha!
WG also cost more than YG when bought directly from AD due to its platinum content if I remember correctly the composition of Rolex’s WG.

Maybe it depends on the reference. I always thought WG Day Dates were less expensive than YG

Depends on the watch I think. Seems like WG Daytonas do better than YG and RG but believe WG DD40's do the worst?

That meteorite dial is special!

I can’t really comment on the secondary market prices because I never pay any attention to them, but that’s one helluva handsome watch.

It's a true space panda in this configuration. I think RG full bracelet trades for the highest in this series.

The price of goods is still based on supply and demand.

WG is more in demand, it will always sell for more, until the pendulum swings back to YG, then that will be more.

White gold/platinum are way more flexible.

Yellow gold and rose gold are pretty tacky when it's a chunky sportswatch IMO.

It's been like this for 15+ years, and I doubt the pendulum is ever swinging back. A lot of the previous downsides of WG in the 1980s/90s have been engineered out.

I don’t believe white gold in general sells for more on the secondary market than yellow or rose gold. However, the meteorite dials definitely look better to many, and seem to be more popular in white gold compared to the other precious metal colors. So I believe this higher white gold price on the secondary market is limited to the Daytona watches

WG does not seem to sell for more than YG or RG in any model, other than a rare bird like a meteorite dial Daytona. It would appear that it sells for less in every single model compared to the other metals but for a few rare instances.

WG Meteorite Daytona and WG Meteorite GMT do quite well in the secondary market.

With WG you have the heft and feel of gold and it is typical “if you know, you know” material. I wear WG daily and wouldn’t do that with YG or RG. Too flashy for my taste. Only exception would be an oysterflex model.

Love your WG meteorite! Wear it in good health.

Simply because of the hype and fashion at the moment white gold is more fashionable than yellow/rose gold.

I’ve actually seen the opposite, I have seen where white gold sells at a discount to the MSRP at an authorized dealer, unless it’s a special Dial like meteorite or something like that.

Well most all gold and TT watches could be had a a discount if you haggle hard enough.

WG is a nice metal and I have owned several over the years. I had the WG BLRO and enjoyed it but when they introduced the SS version on jubilee I swapped it and never looked back. I like the SS version better on jubilee. Without any real available data I believe it is speculation that the WG goes for more than YG. You must take into account the dials, age, etc. If you really want to see what it is worth contact a few Trusted Sellers and get your feelings hurt on the trade/sale value of WG as compared to a like watch in YG.

Reason is simple imho, white gold looks way nicer with the meteorite dial than rose and, especially, yellow gold. For other dial combinations yellow gold has a premium

Im biased and have the YG OF Meteorite which I prefer. I have two friends who own the WG Meteorite OF Version and we all have the SS white dial 116500 and both of them wish they had the meteorite in a colored metal. I dont see some huge premium on WG and with regards to all the other sport models it is the least sought after precious metal

no one is getting discounts at ADs right now or in the past 4 years, doesn't matter what model it is. you can try all you want, you'll just be wasting your own time

I agree. My AD said he even has people waiting for the white gold sub at MSRP even though it can be easily obtained for thousands less new on secondary market.

Maybe it's appropriate to say "money talks; wealth whispers." To echo the other sentiments: WG seems to be sold less than YG; WG is more neutral-colored, thus can be worn more often without attracting the same amount of attention. Anecdotally, YG was (and still is, to an extent) a symbol of wealth. It's desirability seems to be waning a bit, so less "showy" pieces that still offer the same heft & monetary value may be rising in popularity.

In general, white gold models sell less than RG and YG in secondary market.

Only White gold with meteorite dial that can sell higher than RG and YG.
