Tough choice. I love both for different reasons but would opt for the 5170G because it fits my wrist better and is more pleasing to me aesthetically. Love both in white metal though...no wrong answer here.

too expensive for me back then

but the thing was that these were always very hard to get.
if you wanted one in for example 2003, know that you probably had to wait a year or more. It were no application pieces so you could just order one.
but at the end your dealer had more demand than watches so he had to choose you. Therefor some clients had to wait longer or didn't get one.

the 5170 is gorgeous too..... but it took less than 6 months before your AD had them in stock. And you saw them unsold in your AD's window.

believe me, between early 2000 and 2009 I NEVER saw a 5070 in a dealers window. NEVER.

same with 5970 and 5270

5970 was difficult to get and had a waiting list.... how many 5270 do you want ?
call 10 AD and you probably find 10 5270, even with a discount.
Interesting. What about the 5270 original dial? Or is it just the new my double chin white and blue. Just Curious. Interesting debate and info.

Logan the original 5270 can be bought for $125K as well brand new which is roughly 30%. I paid even less for brand new double sealed one several months ago. Again under appreciated by collectors and still soft demand. True Patek purists/collectors have not had appetite for them and much prefer 5970 and me included.

5070P for sure...

The 5070 (in any metal) is simply an iconic piece in the history of Patek. It was, to some degree, ahead of it's time as larger watches were not in demand 10-12 years ago like they are today. As HL65 said, I too regret letting go of my 5070P as it is just a beautiful watch! Not to mention they have increased in value 25-30% over their retail price before becoming discontinued.

Ken, I completely agree with you on that! Seeing 5170J selling in the mid $50k when MSRP WAS $84k is worrisome to say the least.

5070 for me. The added fact that its no more in production just increases the mystique.

I have 6.5'' wrists and the 5170 wears quite large imo, I tried it a year ago at my AD.

I agree. The 5070 would be ginormous on my small wrist, so for size alone I vote for 5170 (and they are much less expensive).

well… i got to try on the 5070 today, they only had the R available as the others were sealed…

it was pretty darn sweet!!!

fyi the 5070G is in heavy plastic and it is really detracting from the beauty of the dial.

which chrono do you prefer

I must be crazy because Gus's pics sealed the deal for me that I'd much rather have the 5170g price /rarity aside. Just purely aesthetically speaking.

I really like the Breguet numbers of the 5170 but I think the leaf hands of the 5070 are way better.
