3 weeks later… not connecting with my Submariner Date - moving on

About 3 weeks ago I got the call for a 126610LN. I was happy at the time, but over the course of several weeks, just really didn’t connect with it.

It’s a very basic monotone looking watch. Though I do get the appeal of it being a great daily. That said, I was at a conference last week, every Joe Schmoe had one. I don’t care about exclusivity but the fact that it’s so ubiquitous isn’t cool for me.

I’m thinking about moving on (maybe to add a 126711CHNR or a neovintage AP, or hold out for a SS GMT / SkyD blue or green).

Kind of venting here, but interested to hear what other people think or if they have ever had a similar experience.

Some pics for your time.

It's a classic watch but one I've never had interest in, probably for the same reasons you describe above.

I agree most of the time if somebody's wearing a Rolex in the wild it's this watch.

I love the aesthetic and think it’s a classic. However I totally get where you are coming from. Loved my 16600 just for that. Similar aesthetic but just different enough to keep it interesting. I have the LV now which is a little more common, but still just different enough for me. I do miss the classic black at times though.

I understand with the new ones. I think the 4 and 5 digits are more interesting and I rarely see them "in the wild".

Nope.

Never had that problem. Sorry.

All due respect, most watches, if you look at them long enough, are gonna get boring. That’s why I own many.

Rolex Submariner’s (US Marines’ rifle) creed:

This is my Sub. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My Sub is my best friend. It is my life.

In 2008, while playing blackjack at Bellagio in LV, I realized 5 of the 7 people at my table were wearing a SS black Submariner. Including me and one female.

I had a big night and sold it the next day and bought a Milgauss at Caesars just to be different.

It's a nice piece but they are everywhere.

'I don’t care about exclusivity but the fact that it’s so ubiquitous isn’t cool for me.' This makes no sense to me but if the watch isn't doing anything for you, move on and find something that you truly connect with.

Sub and GMT are perfect daily watches.

But I hear ya, I pretty much don't wear mine anymore.
Just too boring at this point in my watch journey.

Never held my interest only partly due to the model’s ubiquity among wall street juniors. Saw them daily. Very much the BMW 3 series of watches.

Not a knock on the watch or the car. Just not interesting enough to get me excited.

I have mixed feelings on this one. I have a very colorful collection, but I still think there’s something very low-key cool about a black sub (no date more so than date).

It’s a total classic and super versatile. Yes, they’re common, and it sucks when you’re surrounded by them, but I think in a rotation, its appeal is further enhanced when used to mix things up.

I see a ton of Black Subs all over but usually the older version. A bit less on the new version. It’s of course harder to get the new version than it was with the old one.

I think it’s an amazing watch to wear for yourself. Not for showing off to everyone. I love wearing mine for rough use activities - and for that there is nothing better (if you’re a watch guy, not talking about G Shocks lol!).
I’m so used to (and love) the timer / bezel that I have 3 different subs and will finish it off with a 4th YG LB model.

For quite some time I’ve felt curiously little for my 14060m, I mean I like it but I’m not bananas for it, but will I tell you that my new Deepsea Sea-Dweller has hit me hard in the feels. Can’t take it off, can’t stop grinnin’. May I recommend a Sub on steroids?

Sell it and get the 39mm Explorer. Less common, a fantastic daily, and just a cool watch.

Well you will see them sometimes, more so in certain circles. Would be interested in what kind of conference you were at.

What car do you drive?

I understand and agree with that sentiment. From observation, it’s not just a sea of black Submariners out there, but throw in every other black bezeled diver from other brands, homages, etc.

In any case I always prefer a splash of color on a watch. If I ever felt a need for a black bezel diver, I would be happy with a Black Bay.

I had the 114060 and the 116LV and got bored with both and sold them. Nowadays I sometimes think about buying a sub again. Probably would go for the WG one now.

In almost 40 years of Rolex buying I never had or wanted a Sub. I did have two SS/Plat Yachtmasters, kind of the fancy Sub.
I can relate to the feeling that you just don’t want it anymore. I sold my BLNR three weeks after I got my BLRO, I knew I wouldn’t wear it anymore.
