Rolex Vs. Panerai
I'm positive this subject has been covered before. However, in the interest of good fun and conversation, what is your take on the two? I've had a few very noteworthy sources tell me they don't think Panerai measures up to Rolex. That being said, there are waves of Panerai fans that seem to be everywhere, and many bleed into the Rolex world as well.
So, how do YOU compare the two?? |

I like Panerai's designs, the quality is there. The effortless strap changing and endless strap options is a lot of fun. But, Panerai is not yet ready with their in house mvts., in my experience. The mvts look nice, they seem nice, but they apparently have a ways to go before they can compare reliability-wise with Rolex. I've had 2 BNIB p9000 mvt Pams, both with what I'd consider fatal issues, issues others have reported.
This being said, I love my Pam 24, its modified 7750 is as or more accurate and well adjusted than my Sub C, which is pretty darn accurate. The Pam gains 2 seconds a WEEK. :) From a value standpoint, Rolex, high as prices are becoming, seem a better value. Especially when you consider all the quasi-limited edition eta based Pams that sell for ridiculous amounts. Or, take for example a Pam 233, about $15,000 list, yes, in house, but many have had issues, and for 15k, well that's what you can pick up a BNIB AP ROO Diver for gray mkt, or full msrp of a BP 50 Fathoms! In short, I enjoy having both, but I won't buy any Panerai with an in house mvt for some time. |

Panerai is cool, I just feel like it does not have the timelessness as Rolex and may not stand the test of time...

I wear and enjoy both...but my Sub C is a watch of much higher overall quality. If I could only keep one, it would definitely be my Rolex, but luckily I don't have to choose:)

As an overall brand? Panerai. Bang for your buck? Rolex.
Panerai is the only manufacture with more marketing-fueled, bloated prices than Rolex. |

Panerai PAM 48 (40mm) and my GMT II coke are my daily wearers. GMT is currently getting more wrist time, but I'm sure it will even out. Panerai gets more comments by far....Rolex seems to be considered a more generic watch. I love them both, however I don't think I can get away with any Panerai larger than maybe a 42mm Radiomir.

Rolex is a staple in any collection. Panerai is dessert.

Great question, Brandon. I've always wondered how they compare as well and I'm enjoying the responses.

both are watches worth to have
both very good and timeless right now I do prefer Panerai, more possibilities and I do not like the new fat cases we see in the sports watches (gmt, sub, ) |

Panerai makes many good looking watches, but its quality & service are not on par with Rolex just yet. I bought their 312 as my first PAM, and it had some sort of self-winding problems. PSC had it for 2 months and I just got it back 2 weeks ago, but it's going back there for another 3 weeks since they damaged the hour hand...
I don't dislike the brand. In fact, I am a huge fan of their 1950 case & sandwich dial. However, I still think that Rolex makes much better watches overall. |

I agree with the overall comments on quality, but I like the fact that I have only seen one other panerai in my city....rolexes are on the elevator everytime I head up or down from the office.

I think the most popular reasons to buy Panerai: good looks and high resale
with Rolex, you've got both of them, as well as prestige and reliability

If I had to choose it would be Panerai. I had sold all my Rolex in pursuit of Panerai but when I'd seen and tried on Deepsea I had to have one so I got a Deepsea and have a couple of luminors and may try and track down a PAM 380 as I feel Radiomirs are a bit dressier.

I have had both, and i feel that Rolex is batter value and slightly higher quality however panerai will always feel more individual as they only made so many per year and each one is numbered

I like Ken's idea of having a Rolex movement in a Panerai watch.
GO KEN.

There are many TRF members who are fans of both brands.
I think Panerai is almost as successful a marketing phenomenon as Rolex, although I'm not sure of the wisdom of using "limited edition'' models as a means of cultivating market share. There are simply too many limited Panerai models for them to be taken too seriously IMO. Still, I like the brand and own 2 myself (alongside 6 Rolexes). |
