Considering GMT 16750 - need some advice
Hello all, I have ben drawn to a GMT I 16750. My concerns are that the following items have been replaced:
New plexi glass New hands New bezel What draws to the watch is the matt dial that does not have white gold around the luminous markers found in early examples. Its a 1980 model. Finally in respect to the dial, it shows very little yellowing so matches the new hands pretty well. I am intending to wear the watch on a regular basis and therefore although I love the look of yellowing hands/ dial I am not sure this is something I should wear everyday and I guess at some point the hands will need to be replaced ? I am thinking that I possibly get the best of both worlds in buying the watch I am interested in: A retro styled look, with an amount of re-form , saving me time and money in the future.? Am I right or do I just pay the additional £2000 here the UK and get a completely untouched version ? All comments greatly received. Thanks |

New hands, bezel and plexi alone would not be a deal breaker for me.
Post some pictures if you have and you will get some decent answers and comments on the watch you are planning to buy. |

Have to agree things like inserts are often replaced as part of normal routine service. And all watches with acrylic crystals are automatically replaced at service time unless told not to.Then in most cases if not replaced Rolex would not give a warranty as they would warranty W/R.Now the hands could effect re-sale in the future but again by a tiny amount, service history and condition is what I look for in any watch.

I might be a little suspicious with the parts that have been replaced. My first question would be who did the servicing on this watch? If it was a Rolex service center, I would feel better about purchasing it. If you in your mind have concerns, I would seek out another one. Have a look at the trusted sellers on this forum. Good luck.

Better pics are needed for a evaluation. The pics shown look strange, in particular the crown guards. It almost looks like a 1675 with pointed crown guards. With any watch, especially vintage it's always good to buy the best example you can find. I can say that the 16750 is one of my favorites though, plenty of vintage charm with a wonderful high beat movement and quick set date.
This should be moved to the vintage side Last edited by nsumner; 23 July 2014 at 10:09 PM.. Reason: Content |

If the retro look is preferred, you have no option but preowned. At that point, do whatever you can to mitigate risk. Find an AD that has one, use trusted sellers here, and if there is any doubt as to the watch as a whole or parts in it being genuine have it authenticated.

I agree with the other post regarding the crown guards. They appear to be excessively over polished - which would concern me more than anything else mentioned in the original post.
Many of the vintage watches have had their bezel inserts and/or hands replaced. The 16750 hands seem to be more prone to cracking than some of the other vintage models.

Definitely over polished... Take a look at the 7 o'clock lug.
I would pass due to the case. Hands, inserts, bracelets and even dials can be replaced, but the case only has one life so a thick one is important.
