Just sold my 114060: did I make a mistake?

I bought it second hand originally only this past April from TRF. Original owner bought it from AD this past March. I’ve been wearing the watch at home since quarantine happened perhaps 3x a week. So it was in excellent condition still. Sold for $11,500, got about 4 emails within a few hours on CL. I sold thinking I can just buy the 124060 at retail price in a few years. Wanted to sell now thinking value might be inflated now but will drop after people realize 124060 is a superior watch. I only checked afterwards on chrono24 and the value is crazy now ($13-15k)

Thoughts? Did I “lose” money by selling early? Should I have waited to actually get a 124060 (whenever that happens) to have sold the 114060?

Who knows what values will do but why would you have to wait 2 years to buy the 41mm? You can already afford it with the proceeds from the sale.

I have a SubC w/ date and always wished it was a bit larger, now it is and I really want the new one too so I understand. Lol

Making predictions is hard, especially when it involves the future.

It's part of the experience.

I've sold early and "lost" tens of thousands. I also passed up opportunities and "lost" tens of thousands.

But to answer your question. Yes, you made a mistake. You now will be watchless for awhile

It's not necessarily the price of selling - its the cost to replace it. You've taken a huge gamble assuming you could pick up a 124060 so you've now gone from having 1 sub to 0 subs. Seems waitlists will be very tough for the foreseeable.

Personally, I wouldn't have sold without a replacement lined up. But that's just me.

yes you did. You won't find a 124060 in a few years unless you go grey and spend $50k on it.

As with buying, probably best to ask before taking action and not afterwards

I don’t think so. Prices don’t seem to of gone up either - they’re just listings.

Yup i'd say it was a mistake. if you didnt need the money why not just hold onto it? Every rolex will at the very least hold its value (SS sports at least).

What’s worse is that you have sold what may be the superior watch for a hypothetical purchase in the future.....

The question is whether you will be able to obtain another Sub.
And what price you will pay. And if you will be happy with that.

I saw one listed at $17,950 today. Crazy, but true.

It won't drop. What makes you think that? It will continue to appreciate. Even more so now that its discontinued. Its not a car. As soon as you walk out the door the value goes up. its gone from $7500 retail two years ago to now $11.5K. Its a classic now. Do the math. I bet its $13-$14K in two years.
