If another site I just found is correct (tracking historical exchange rates), then in 2001 the CAD was 0.65 USD (on average, over the year), so the 30,410CAD cost of the Day-Date 118209 would be around $19,766 US. That seems about right to me. Guessing someone here has an actual American price-list from the era.
It depends quite a bit on the configuration and condition (and for some people whether box and papers are included), but in 2022 the watches generally seem to be obtainable for the same amount---from around 19-22k US. So they haven't appreciated---if you consider that $20k in 2001 is worth about 34k in 2022, you could say they've fared poorly as "investments." |

Always loved this bezel with the oyster bracelet especially. The RG/domed/oyster/black Arabic dial was the ultimate “antiestablishment DD” as it was about as far from the traditional configurations as possible. Yet somehow it worked.

It’s really its own thing, I’d say. If you expect the Day-Date to be “the President,” you won’t like it. I’ve seen plenty of folks here say that the Day-Date just looks wrong without the President bracelet and the fluted bezel (platinum excepted until this year). To me, this is a really special piece: sporty/ss looking but also elegant enough to be dressy; the perfect size for my 6.75” wrist; the mass of white gold; a complication I find truly useful. And I’ve yet to get bored with the dial. It’s really stealthy, too—given the nature of my work (and temperament), attention is a negative.

My platinum 118206. This thing is massive on the wrist... For a 36mm watch! IMO a reference that is a serious sleeper.

Stealth
For a few years, I wore my Rolex DD 18206 almost daily. I like the monochromatic look and it is very stealthy. The only time someone noticed it was by a salesman at Tourneau in Fifth Avenue during a visit to NYC many years ago.

$32k USD for a 118209 (white gold) back in 2000? I’m not in a position to say you’re wrong, but that seems kinda high, no?

Very happy with this, and was glad it didn't have a fluted bezel (just personal preference -- prefer the more understated look).

Smooth bezel looks more modern and youthful. The fluted bezel very classic rolex. Like them both but they give a VERY DIFFERENT vibe.
especially on certain models the bezel makes or breaks it |

When I looked at my first 118206 it was in Cabo and the list price was $26k. A Daytona was $6k and subs and GMT’s were in the $4’s. This was all in 2002-2003. I also owned a white gold 118209 in 2005 that had the glacier Roman dial (slight frankel watch but dials we’re looked at differently at that time) I bought from a grey market dealer and paid $16k for it brand new with box and papers. I traded a DaytonaC this year for a 118206 and some cash my way and I honestly haven’t looked back. The smooth bezel Day Date is just great.
