Dear Rolex enthusiats,

First, let me congratulate you all for such a great forum. Its perfect for a newbie like me who is inches away from making its first Rolex purchase ! Notice...English is my second language so my spelling is far from perfect.

Basically, i have 2 questions:

1) I live in Montreal (Canada) and need a good address to make my purchase. I know of Gambard and Everest but i am not sure they are an AD. Does anyone have a list of AD in Montreal (Canada) ? Can anyone recommend one ?

2) I am hesitating between the SS GMT-II and the SS Sub. How much should i pay (max in US funds-cash) for these. Did lots of research on the internet and found the following prices: $4,300 for the GMT-II and roughly the same for the Sub. Will an AD match these prices ?

You can call Rolex Canada in Toronto to find out where their ADs are. BTW, welcome fellow Canuck. I'm about 180km northwest of you in Ottawa.

ADs will NOT match US prices. Canada has insanely high import duties on such luxury items as watches. A GMTII goes for CDN$6150 and if memory serves, the Sub is about $300 more than the GMT, plus tax and dont expect a discount. Rolex Canada advises their ADs to not give discounts on sports models that dont have yellow gold in them.

Since you're in MTL, why not drive to the US and buy there and save over $1,000. Or buy online here (but you risk getting hit with excise and good and service taxes - but our customs are hit and miss. They open some boxes but not others.

Out in Vancouver they were both the same price.
$5,412. before our lovely taxes.
The TT Sub was $8,158 before tax.

Welcome to TRF, JS. Don't worry about the language or spelling. We have quite a few members who are similarly challanged - examples include Daren, JJ, Frans, why the list can go on and on and on . . . .

My vote would be for the all black GMT (but if you've been reading this forum, you know that I am terribly biased

). But really you can't go wrong with either the GMT or the Sub date. Both are great watches that will last several lifetimes.

John's right. Go across the border (leaving any current watch at home) and buy in the U.S. Then wear it back across.

When I checked US prices, both were around $4525.
So add the 18% exchange & local state tax your up to about $5,600 Cdn.
You do save $500 plus the chance you'll get nicked at the boarder.
Plus if you travel with you watch across the line later on, you may need to show you've paid the Cdn Taxes on it.

Do you always carry tax receipts with you? I travel internationally with high end watches and I've never been asked for a receipt.

With my first Rolex, I got asked where I purchased it etc .
Being an accountant, I actually had a copy of the receipt with me.
Since then, it looks well worn so I'm not as concerned about it anymore.
BUT, I will take a receipt with me if I take my new one.
Our Auto Boarder crossings can be miserable.
We have been "randomly" chosen for a "review" ( Ie dogs in the car, lift the floormats, trunk, hood. door panels, glove box. All except the "cavity search")
Maybe It's our famous "BC BUD" that they are looking for ( BC - Washington) boarders.
I have not had any issues via AIR, Just the road crossing guards.

The Boarder dudes here collect the 14 or 15% tax.
If you do declare at the boarder, the CDN Import tax on the watch is 5% plus the 15%HST.
Just my experiences

Well I have to admit i haven't crossed the Canadian border by car in 38 years - 1967 was the last time when I went to the World's Fair in Montreal. I only have air experiences since then and have had zero trouble there.

There are ADs in the USA that offer discounts also. Maybe 5-15%

Greetings and welcome to the forum Maothecat. I hope you choose well.

Here's something for you to think about.... Why not get a RED/BLACK bezel 16710 like this one! It's slim enough to wear with a business suit and won't drag the cuff unless you like to wear your watch very loose.

In Australia they are A$6800 from an AD. This includes GST @ 10%

This is a great place for advice, friends and frolic.

Go with either one....both are excellent watches. While the Sub-date was, is and will always be the all time CLASSIC in the Rolex line-up, the GMT-II is definitely the more practical one with professional features which you and I (as laymen) can use in our day to day lives.

You're the boss, pal...go with your heart and also with the one that gives you the widest smile!!
