Are you an airbnb or hotel person?

We have friends with two young kids staying with us this weekend, and they're squarely in the airbnb camp. They love having separate rooms away from the kids, as well as the added space / kitchen that comes along with most airbnb's. They don't necessarily need the amenities of the big hotels.

We are the opposite - hotels or bust (as many of you probably have seen ). Suites are nice but even a basic room with two queen beds works for us and the wild boys. While we don't need spa services and generally don't even get our room made up, we do enjoy the perks that come along with elite status like free breakfast, 4 pm checkout, added points, etc. Not to mention, I don't have to worry about cleanup upon check out.

So when traveling, which do you go prefer?

With you 100% — I refuse to stay in an AirBNB. The prices on Airbnb are outrageous for the very little you get. With AirBnB, form the moment you retrieve the keys from a plastic combination lockbox, you know you’re receiving a low quality service

AirBNB 100% ... especially with kids! I have travelled all over the place using AirBNB's. Just like watches you need to research the place and feedback from other folks!

This all depends. If it’s just her and I, it’s a hotel or nice B&B. If it’s a lot of us, it’s renting a house large enough to accommodate us all from VRBO. Never Airbnb.

Always stay at hotels.
AirBNB offers the consumer no protection from a corporate standpoint. For example, I have a home in Naples Florida and we were devastated by Hurricane Ian. There was a story in the local paper about a traveler that was headed to Sanibel Island the week after Ian hit. The owner, not AirBNB, refused to provide a refund. The bridge to Sanibel had been severed, there was no electricity, no stores….. and no refund. I’ll take a nice Marriott, or similar, anytime.
Btw, the traveler did contact AirBNB and received no support.

Used to do Airbnb but the value prop has shifted firmly back to hotels now. For one thing the extra fees are obscene. You look up a place and go to checkout and then the price at least doubles with all the Airbnb fees, taxes, cleaning fee, resort fee etc.

Hotels for me but I rent out some AirBnbs especially in CA where you don’t have to deal with long term tenants and better $.

We use Marriott Vacation Club about 4-6 weeks per year, it's the perfect blend of hotel and AirBB. All the space and in-room amenities of the AirBB, but with hotel-ish amenities on the properties and great locations. This is our go to when we have the kids (now 9,13) with us. When it's just me and the lady, hotels. When we take the kids abroad, it's usually all four of us in a hotel with adjoining rooms, though we are trying a rental condo in Barcelona next month.

Are you an airbnb or hotel person?

Whichever one makes more sense.

Usually, it’s the hotel/resort.

When we were in Norway, airbnbs were abundant, and half the price of hotels. They were well furnished and very comfortable. The hosts would even meet us in person with welcome baskets.

Here in the US, some dude renting a tent in his backyard charges $380 a night and $250 cleaning fees

I can do both although many hotels now charge ridiculous "resort fees" which can add up to several hundred dollars.

I don't understand why NYC hotels charge these when there is nothing resort like at even the most luxurious NYC hotels.

Agree on both accounts, gents.

We definitely love seeing people and mingling around the pool, especially with young ones who gravitate towards all the other kids.

Hotels for work
Villas or apartment’s for holidays

Last year I spent a bit of time down in London & for convenience - can’t beat a hotel. Up/ shower/ dressed/ buffet breakfast & Go.

For holidays - cannot stand hotels. Living in close proximity to 100’s of other people total turn off. I get for some they want the convenience but if willing to put in the effort/ chose wisely/ perhaps spend a touch more - can’t beat your own private space. Last year - we had a villa in lanzarote & at night after 7pm - most nights total quiet apart from sea.

We also prefer hotels- I feel like I never get comfortable in an Airbnb.

We used to rent out or cottage in a Michigan resort town, and did very well with it, but it was a lot of work. I also got very upset with every little knick, scratch, etc. Unavoidable, but we take care of our stuff and those little things bother me. So we stopped doing it.

Kind of a middle ground- but Marriott now has the home rental program they created to compete with Airbnb. Many are owned by Marriott, and are usually very nice homes in desirable locations. I also believe some can be booked with Marriott points- don't quote me on that.

We almost booked for Lake Tahoe last summer using the Marriott home rental, but we had to cancel the trip.

For me and the Mrs. it’s hotels all the way. I don’t even like staying at a relative’s house.

Air bnb because I have a young child. Trying to find a hotel with a 2 bedroom suite is near impossible. When your kid goes to sleep at 7:30 and your sitting there with the light off like an idiot you’ll wish you had a real house.

With an air bnb you have to be selective. 95% of the properties are crap but the other 5% are executed and managed extremely well.

If I didn’t have kids I’d save a bundle and just stay at a hotel.
