Picking up my first Patek, need your advice
Hi everyone. I'm about to pull my trigger to get my first Patek. I'm looking to get the 5146G.
Can any current owner let me know what they like or don't like about the 5146? |

You must ofc like the watch for yourself, but for me I'm not a great fan of the look of the subdials and the Patek logo at the bottom of the dial.

Don't own one, I don't like the look of the dial, especially the power reserve indicator on top.
For me I don't think power reserve indicator should be so in the face on the dial, I would have prefer to have it at lower part of the dial like the Datograph. |

It's a nice choice, congrats. Do check out the 5396G before you pull the trigger though, many prefer the cleaner look.

My feelings have definitely changed on this model. I used to be quite fond of it but now I must admit that I find it a bit "dated". It's a classic Patek design and a direct descendant of the original 5035. Things I don't like? Subdials seem less intuitive to read at a glance, I don't care for the Patek marque at the bottom of the dial instead of the top where it belongs, and as for the lume on a non sports watch - no thanks.
All my objections are of course a matter of very personal preference - which i believe is the basis of your query. The 5146 remains a very classic piece coveted by many, and with good reason. Mechanically sound and a very versitile timepiece, it will no doubt provide many years/generations of faithful service. I do think the suggestion of the 5396 is worth a look. Very clean and more 'modern' in appearance. Good luck with whatever your decision! |

I think the 5146 is a very interesting design, available in many variants (easy to find the one that perfectly suits you), and has a contemporary size as well. But, in that price range I'd also check out the 5396 as others mentioned. And I'd also try on the 3940 and 5140 as well, if you could spend a bit more on the acquisition.

That's it! I can't memorize all the reference numbers! I'm sick of Googling Patek models that auto-correct to Patel! All these "whaddaya think" questions with NO PICTURES! AAARGH!
BTW, 5146 looks great. I dunno why folks can't appreciate the watchmaker signature in the lower half. It's still a work of art. |

5146 is a classic design, I love the look and I really enjoy having the power reserve on the dial.

I agree that the power reserve on the 5146 is a useful feature. It really is a classic annual calendar and certainly deserves its place in any Patek watch collection. The 5396 in contrast has a more contemporary look, although the dial design is not new.

While I do not own the 5146, I do find its design to be unique and have no issues with the power reserve indicator being up top and the patek logo residing on the bottom. I find it very well balanced. That said, I actually do favor the 5396 largely because I dislike reading the day and month off of a sub dial.

After 2 weeks of searching, the recipient is ruled down to 5146j or 4936j.
The power reserve is a great feature. However, she prefers the roman letters and mother of pearl dial over the power reserve feature. Any opinion in between the 2 are deeply appreciated. |

I don't like the dial at all. Other than that is a beautiful watch.
