Manual Winding

With Patek's manual winding watches like the 5070 or the 3919, can you wind them too much, or do you just wind them until the crown won't go any further? And, is it best to wind them fully each time, or only wind them enough for a day or two?

From the instructions for the 5170:

"We recommend that you wind your watch at about the same time every day, preferably in the morn- ing. Please take off your watch when you wind it. This will prevent lateral pressure on the winding stem that in the course of the years could damage the stem tube.

dynamometric winding crown
Patek Philippe has equipped your watch with a dynamometric winding crown that eliminates any risk of damage to or failure of the winding mechanism when the watch has reached the fully wound state.
When you turn the crown, you will notice a series of delicate clicks as soon as the mainspring is fully wound. These clicks are normal; they simply indi- cate that further winding is no longer necessary."

Just curious, how does everyone maintain a manual wind perpetual ? As without the benefit of being able to place it on a winder, what do you normally do ?

I still wind mine every day even if I don't wear it for the whole week, because it's pain in the ass to set the dates again if I let it stop.
