Polish or no ?

What I would do is to first investigate if your RFC is skilled at polishing. As some mentioned. not all are. But if so... I guess it depends. Last service I didnt. This service I did a light polish. Before I was like "dont do it" but gotta tell you, the feeling of having a scratch free bracelet is pretty special. feels like a new watch.

Great advice! Do you just call the RFC (re-finishing centre?) and ask them if they can polish watches, and if the answer is yes, then ask them if they are any good at it?

Or are we relying purely on anecdotal internet reviews, where people (apart from Padi), tend to only review when there are problems, and not when the watches come back as expected?

I’ve had good and bad experiences with RSC polishing jobs.

My late father’s 1972 DJ was regularly serviced by RSC from 1972 right up to its last service in 2018. So it had approx 7 or 8 full RSC services in 46 years and was worn almost every day over that 46 year period. The case looks good, but the lugs have without question become thinned.

Does it matter? No. My dad wore the hell out of his watch. One watch for life after he bought it and I still ware it ‘gently’ even now in 2024. 52 years of use and it’s still ticking and looking great.

Also, an SD can afford to lose a lot of metal to polishing I suspect before the eye even notices.

I’d get it fully serviced and let RSC work their magic on the case.

So I have a strange update.

Rolex got back with a service quote. They have told me they are fixing/regulating the movement for free, although I have to purchase a compulsory crown for £120 to do so.

The manager of my AD who I deal with seemed a little confused.

Which led me back to the polish question. He asked for me and they said it would
Not be refinished, I then countered asking if I paid for a full service would they refinish it and they said it wouldn’t even be an option at this moment in time to request that.

My watch is definitely out of warranty by a good two years and they have classed it as warranty work.

Either doing me a favour for some unknown reason … or perhaps an admittance of this 32 issue debate?

Got to admit, this is very reassuring for those of us with 32** movements that have already been repaired under warranty and are soon to be 5 years old.

Sounds like the watch has a classic case of 32** fever, and Rolex are doing the right thing and fixing it for free?

Out of interest, did you ever bash the crown or is it visibly worn / damaged?

I mean yeah probably. I’ve hit every part of this watch on something. But nothing where I notably done anything.

An SD looks wrong when it's polished. Sounds like you've taken reasonably good care of it and it's earned a few scratches. Keep it that way would be my preference.
