is DD36 too small?

Im desiring a used DD and the last gen 36s are fairly priced, but hard for me to tell if too small. I think the 39mm explorer looks good on me, but hard to tell on a dress watch. Any pics?

It’s all personal preference Sam. There are some folks who have 8.5 inch wrist who refuse to wear >34mm watches. Then there are people with 5 inch wrist who wear nothing but Grahams sized watches. Then there’s everything else in between. 36mm is my minimum and is appropriate for dress style watches.

I don't have pictures comparing the sizing of the 214270 Explorer and a 36 mm DD but have owned both. The Explorer wears definitely bigger than the DD, but unless you have huge wrists the DD should look just fine on you

i don't think its possible for a day date to look bad on someone even if its "small" and you would have to have like 7.5 inch wrists for it to actually be "small". it has way too much presence. try them both on and then go with whatever you feel is best price wise and looks wise

No. It was the only size DD for decades. Classic.

I had the DD 36 and have a 6.75 inch wrist. I ended up swapping it for a DD40 and I feel it is just right. Obviously everyone has their preferences but I am glad I made the change.

You have to see it and feel it on your own wrist - don't pull the trigger until you do.

It depends.
I am fine with it and I wouldn't change my 36mm DD for a 40mm.

You better go try it on. I had heaps of friends say that the DD36 is a classic or they thought they would feel as though its a good size and bought one without trying it in real life.

Once they got it they found it way too small and immediately flipped it and lost a few grand doing so. Expensive lesson to try on a watch.

Go to the AD first and try on a DD36 and DD40. For me the 36 was way too dainty in todays day and age and I dont exactly have big wrists only 6.75 inches. I went with the DD40 perfect size and perfect proportions.

This is exactly what I ended up doing. I tried on a 36mm in store and while it didn't look small from pics - it just didn't feel right on my wrist..

@OP: You will get many people who are fans of the classic 36mm size.

My advice is go and try them on.

I have 6.3 inch wrists so smaller than peterpl and find the proportions of the DD40 are perfect as well

If you buy one that you don't love - it will bug you forever and you will end up selling it.

Pics for reference

If you are use to 39mm+ watches the 36 appears too small when you put it on. After that initial adjustment period which for me started out being a few days it just feels right.

The larger DD feels like it’s sized just like a diver. Similar profile to a Daytona but bigger. In a way a bit odd for such a classic watch.

If you haven’t got big wrists then 36.

The 36mm looks much better on you.
The 40mm looks like it’s about to overtake your wrist but as long as you’re happy

I wear both sizes fine; 36mm is traditional as it is classic sizing. Given that you prefer the 214270 39mm sizing you will likely prefer the 40mm DD.

I'll echo the general advice: try them.

To add, though, I'd also argue that the Datejust 41 appears bigger than you'd think on a wrist. For some reason, the 36mm DJ looks closer in size to my GMT-Master 16700 than a modern DJ41.

FWIW, I do think the jubilee bracelets on the DJ36s are pretty cool. And as far as exclusivity is considered, the blue/black dialed ones with the jubilee bracelets, stick hour markers, and fluted bezels are not nearly as quick to obtain as you'd imagine.

With my 6.75" wrists, I find 36mm too small personally. The DD40, which is already a little smaller than 40mm, feels better to me.

I suspect a lot depends on wearer age. Older wearers spent years when a 36mm watch was perfectly fine for a man's wrist, perhaps even a little large. Remember that in the 1970's a submariner was considered a chunky sports watch and a 39mm AP was nicknamed "jumbo." Someone who only started wearing watches 15 years ago is probably less likely to feel the same about sizes.

In my opinion, yes 36 is too small for a man. But the next guy might think the exact opposite. All comes down to your personal opinion

36 all the way. Unless you have very large wrists the 40 looks cartoonish.

Really annoyed that they seem to have decided that the 36 is now a de facto lady’s watch as it’s virtually impossible to spec without diamonds, and even then has no lume.

One day I will buy a DD, and it will be 36mm.

(Pissing about at a vintage dealer recently...)
