What Is It With the Rose Gold?

So been doing quite a bit of watch shopping lately, and I am noticing that a lot of brands are pouring on the rose gold vs the traditional yellow gold in the past several years.

Is it just a trend, or is this a new cost cutting method companies are using?

(though it also seems a trend to use more SS these days as well)

I take it all as a personal insult, since SS and rose gold just don't look very good next to my yellow gold wedding ring! 😁

Not sure if it is a trend, but I like it. Yellow gold ages a watch IMO, and rose gold suits my complexion better so I'm all for it.

Am i wrong that most yellow gold watches are 18k same as rose? If not then that would certainly save some money.

I suspect its more just what the market prefers. I like both rose and yellow personally just depends on the piece.

Why do you say rose gold is cost cutting versus yellow gold?

They use the same about gold if they are both 18k. It’s the other alloys that are different.

C’mon, how can it be the same about gold when it’s a different colour?

Infact Rose Gold is expensive because the alloys are usually copper , platinum or palladium.

Do you have more details on the amount of platinum and palladium in rose gold compared to white gold and yellow gold?

What is Rolex Everose Gold?
Rolex Evorose gold can most easily be described as rose gold. Unlike standard yellow gold, rose gold is not 100% gold. In fact, Rose gold is generally a mixture of classic yellow gold, silver, and copper metals. Rose gold is sometimes also known as pink gold due to its pink hue

But standard yellow gold in the context of watches is not 100% gold either. The gold used in Rolex watches (and pretty much any gold watch) is 18K, which means its 75% gold by weight no matter what color it is. The color variation occurs as a result of the different materials used in composing the other 25% of the alloy.

I dislike yellow gold and would never buy any yellow gold. I far prefer rose or stainless steel or white metals such as platinum or palladium

I have walked away from dozens of watches over the past 2 years because they used rose/red/pink gold for the case. It is not very pleasing to my eye. One of the best examples is the JLC Duometre. I love the watch but hate the case color. Only one company has the best metallurgical blend of rose gold and that is PP. Their rose gold can almost fool you into thinking it is yellow gold until you look at it next to another PP that is made of yellow gold.

I don’t care much for YG, preferring RG for my DJ41. The Chocolate dial and RG is like a match made in heaven.

Somehow I started considering getting a gold watch recently. Might be being the 40s or SS seems over-priced these day and my brain sub-conciously trying to justify getting a new watch. :-D. Anyway, I prefer rose/pink over yellow.

I believe Rose Gold to be in fashion currently. If it’s a trend, it will fade away. Only time will tell.

It used to be Rose Gold was for the ladies jewelry / watches.

Personally, I like the look of Yellow Gold, and have even passed on buying several watches that I wanted / would have bought, if they were available in Yellow Gold … an A. Lange 1815, for example, which only comes in Pink Gold, having discontinued this same watch 2-3 years ago in Yellow Gold.

Trend I think. It looks feminine to me, I always associate it with ladies jewelry.

What’s the point of offering RG (an entirely different gold color) if it looks similar to YG?

It only makes sense that RG should look different from YG.

Ha! I was thinking the same thing...this is one old discussion point

I'm up and down with Rose gold or even white at times...I much prefer Platinum but some in rose with colored dials are stunning

It's a trend that has been around in watches for 120 years.

Rose gold uses copper while yellow gold uses tin for its alloy, so no savings there.

I was told …

Rolex Yellow Gold = 75% Gold w/ 25% Silver + a “little” copper

Rolex Everose Gold = 75% Gold w/ 25% Copper + a “little” silver

The percentages of metals of the 25% unknown.

I like Rose Gold so much better. It tends to be more understated and fits my complexion better.

Plus since the main non-gold metal in the alloy is copper, rose gold is much more durable and scratch resistant than yellow gold.

YG just doesn't work with my complexion somehow whereas RG seems to match far better on every watch I've ever tried and bought.

I agree with a lot of posters about metal color and how it looks on your skin tone. I would have never considered RG in the past, but did for my first dress piece. Absolutely love it.

The point is that the watch has warmer tone to it instead of looking obnoxiously orange. It makes a difference when you see it in person.
