If three watches covers all your scenarios then that’s all you need.

60 watches is a tad over the “nuts” line.
This sums it up nicely!

I think under 10 is about right........... I almost got down to single figures once

Two schools of thought.

Some say we only need one wristwatch at any given time. And except for the two wristers, one can only wear one watch at a time anyway. So more than one is more than enough.

Apart from a wedding band, some say a wristwatch is the only acceptable jewelry/accessory for gentlemen. So one can have as many wants.

I do believe that you are your own judge of your own situation. You know when it’s enough. And therefore getting one more is more than enough.

I know i have more than enough. I dont even know exactly how many i have.

I have more than 200 (including 6 rolex and 2 tudor pieces). But half are seiko.

I have 11 pieces above USD20,000 (including 4 PM rolex). And half are below USD1,000. The balance in between USD1K and USD20K.

Ive allowed myself to accumulate much as I intend to bequeath all to my two sons when i turn 60 (theyll be young gentlemen by then). I plan to end up with just one piece (a YG DD that i plan to buy when i reach 50).

I currently own 5 - though two of these (G-Shock/SKX) I don't really consider part of my main collection and are purely used as beaters.

I have 3 'nice' watches which I regularly rotate and there's another 3 watches on my wish list. Six seems too many for me though, as I often wear a watch for a minimum of a week at a time. This leads me to think that 4, maybe 5, is the max I could go to without diluting my collection too much. Part of my problem I think lies with my 10-slot watch box which is always half empty. If I had a smaller box which was full, I'm convinced it curtail my cravings for more.

Personal preference is the answer....no right or wrong. If you love having 1,3, or 100...as long as it makes you happy! IMO.
I choose quality over quantity, and have only a couple greens fees or criteria, to fit in my ‘now smaller’ collection. Love the hobby, love the chase, love many references....my goal has been to try everything I think I’d like and see what stays. Pretty much there, but always have something out there to look at or be interested in, keeps the spark alive. But as far as a steadfast # of pieces, I generally have settled having between 3-5 as a comfortable number.

What's the current mix Richard? Saw the new PP but haven't seen lately the diamond dialed Platona or the blue BLRO

I used to say as many as I could comfortably wear in a one month period.

But things kinda got out of hand, so I stretched that to a two month period.

Problem solved...much better.

I don't see the point of buying watches and not wearing them. To me the sweet spot is 3-4, but a true "collector" buys watches for different reasons perhaps.

A sign that one has too many is when one is compelled to post how many they have.

This theory works in many categories beyond watches.

Been there.........I'd say there is a minimum of two required for any self respecting WIS for this very reason.

On the high side......as long as I have funds to support my collecting I will get more enjoyment out of looking at watches than most other ways I can spend or use those funds......I'm gonna go with your age as a limit....It is kind of like the Cylinder Index on Garage Logic. Any self respecting Garage Logician has to own a number of cylinders that equal their age......from this point forward same goes for watches. This concept may need to be a sitcky

Best,

Scott

I have 5 and 2 of them wear it very rare....
I think 3-5 it’s the best.....
If you want to have you can make your collection from 20 but think when you wear all? Also it’s impossible to not have a preferred watch and this you will wear most....

I don't think there is a blanket amount that can be applied to every one of us. This is a question for each individual. Some people have large Rolex collections and are in a quest to add to it. That's terrific for those who are able to do this. There are some people who believe only one Rolex is enough because they can only wear one watch at a time. Most people fall between these two scenarios. There is no right or wrong answer to it as each of us have to draw our own conclusions as to how much is enough.

More than 3 for practical wear. For a collection sky is the limit if you have too much money and don't care

I think I am realizing that 5 is probably too many. I have a Sub C, an Air King, a DJ41, a Tudor BB GMT, and a Tag. I never wear the Tag anymore, and I almost always grab the GMT over the Air King. The Sub is my all-around watch and the DJ my dress watch, so I really only need one more. I am thinking about trading a couple of these to try to get a Batman. I don't think I need more than 4, and probably not more than 3.

As a Rolex watch collector, there is no limit to how many I "need".
I’ve bought these, like some buy 50’s Fender Strats or 30’s French posters by Cassandre or Colin. Worn most and then put away.
No such thing as having too much of a good thing.

As for a daily wearer....w/g Sub LB.
My happiness comes in knowing I purchased something I love, which will pass to my son/grandson.

For me, I was always a watch wearer, meaning I use them and all their functions daily as part of my job. I don’t collect simply to hoard. For me, once my collection got up to like 8 watches, it’s like they are only being worn 6 1/2 weeks out of an entire year. For me watches are special because of the association to events in our lives. These large rotations, that association process does not occur, rendering them simply objects and then I found for me, i was missing the other watches in my collection and not appreciating what I had. I pared down to 2 in regular rotation and another 2 for certain instances. I enjoy them much more and they all have more meaning.

I'm content with 3... well, maybe 4 solid pieces for a collection.

The odd balance of fun watches like a Swatch Sistem 51 or Timex Q is more like a novelty item. I don't really consider it part of the collection. Fun watches are more like the random t-shirt you bought during a summer holiday just in the heat of moment.

Here’s a formula that will help determine the appropriate number...

N + 1

(N is your current number)

I believe all my watches should be worn and used so for me I think 7 would be an absolute limit and one I don't plan on reaching.

I think a rotation of 3, not including beaters, is an ideal scenario. Keeps everything being worn frequently and still provides versatility.

Personally - I really think the sweet spot is 5.
Any more than 5 and you're not spending enough wrist time w/ each one.
And that's just shameful. : )

How many cars does Jay Leno have?

I dont know but he is a collector and hopefully he has driven them all.

There are many reasons why you would have a collection of... anything.

If you have a desire to own watches (or whatever) as long as you're not taking away material support from your family, go for it, the sky is the limit.

I own 5 Rolex and I wear 4 of them all weekly. Save for my DD40 which is for special occasions. So I rotate 4 watches per week. Power reserve is a wonderful thing!

If you own a watch, (especially a Rolex given the cost) probably you should wear it, but it's a free country.

Sure it isn’t you scoopa? ;)

How many is too many - hard to say. At the height of my collector days at one point I think I had ~25 pcs and that was too many for me. Now I’m down to 12 and I feel like I could probably add 1 or 2 and it would still work... couldn’t imagine having 60 let alone 106 :)

I have a 12-watch collection and it is definitely not too much, probably could get another two or three but that would be it for me
