And they have no humor in my "Vincent" pick order (which also sent her into a tizzy).

I'd always ask "how are you?" as I picked her up.

So, whatever she said, I'd repeat to the baristas: "Give me whatever you recommend for someone who is feeling like ____________."

That's a fair assessment among those who knew espresso before it became an undifferentiated market.

What Starbucks did was shift the mass market to steamed milk lattes (which also wasn't new to café con leche drinkers). For that, Howard shifted an entire segment to milk and we'll never look back. When he bought the brand it was just a small retailer on Seattle street corners.

As a large group of current and/or prospective customers, individual members share similar needs to be "on trend". They marketed exceptionally well to the youngest segments.

I can't tell you how proud I was when my youngest granddaughter told me one morning as I drove her to school - "no, not here, go to DD - their prices are better".

A convert!

I'm not much of a coffee drinker but Starbucks seems to have cars and people lined up all day and night eager for their caffeine fix.

Gourmets these people probably aren't, but when you need a fix, whatever is handy will probably do.

We watch a ton of TV from Europe and we marvel at their caffeine habits, they sit down with an egg cup size cup, while in the US they have the equal of a Big Gulp size container.

And the Brits put milk and sugar in their TEA. In their TEA?????

This thread reminds me of the time when i was visiting Bangkok and this is how they make old fashion coffee in some of the old cafes there and the taste was amazing and I swear, on some of the places i've been to, it looks like they were using old socks for filter.

I can’t understand the global attraction. Starbucks has thousands of stores outside the US. Half their business is international.
