Is this for the motif or the palm motif?

I’m thinking they weren’t big sellers. Neither appealed to me. The YM ll wasn’t my cup of tea, either. I think those were profit driven decisions, as in they weren’t selling well.

Not sure I agree with this, both the fluted motif and palm dials were very difficult to source from the AD, they also drive a premium over the standard DJ dials.

FYI, no premium for the motif dials. They are the same price as the plain dials. To further explain my idea about them, the Palm is just weird to me, and the fluted ones are overkill, on a DJ with fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet, which, for me, is the only configuration, I would want. I don’t think I’m alone in that. The Datejust represents quintessential Rolex style, and when Rolex messes with that basic style, beyond choosing Romans versus stick markers, and puts unusual dials on it, they are risking people not liking it. I presume that is what happened here. It’s just an educated guess, though.

Hi Kat, you are correct both the plain and motif dials are the same price at RRP, however the motif was way harder to obtain, my AD had a very small amount compared to the plain. In the UK on the grey market I can pick up a DJ41 on oyster with smooth bezel at or just below RRP, however the same watch but with the motif dial is around 1.5 - 3K more. I can only put this down to their scarcity?

By the way I 100% agree that the dial looks too muck on jubilee with fluted bezel, however on oyster with smooth it looks great 👍🏻

Another TRF member recently posted a link to a Rolex patent for an updated YM2 movement. New YMII movement, new watch coming soon. I am excited. I wear 44mm well and liked the Yacht Master II. Fun watch with an interesting Chronograph.

Fluted motif dial is amazing. I wanted to get one for awhile, but already have a DJ and an explorer.

Will be too bad if they discontinue the fluted motif.

The YMII is one of the ugliest watches ever, not just Rolex catalogue, but ever period. They waited too long to discontinue that model.

Should they really discontinue the fluted motif dials they might come up with a kind of "celebration fluted motif dial" where every color of the previous fluted motifs is represented. A bit daring for a Datejust but not completely unrealistic if you look at some of their recent releases. What do you think?

Really interesting idea. I know Rolex had to develop the laser technique for the palm and motif dials so I can't imagine them no making either new designs or new iterations.

I never even heard my AD talk much about the motif dials. I’m guessing they didn’t get too many of em in.

February 2nd, 2024 = Ground Hog Day, Scooba. It was confirmed several weeks ago, but no harm in repeating it.

Why is it still on the website if it was official as a few weeks ago?

When they discontinued the motif dials for the DD40 back in Aug 2022 it fell off the website immediately. I’m not buying this thread. Even when models are officially discontinued (off the website) they still trickle in even up to a year after, so still in the supply chain reasoning doesn’t make much sense.
