Which chrono?

I sold my '50s Rolex precision and have about 1400 to spend on a chrono. I am looking for something with classic looks that will hold its value. Most likely to purchase 2nd hand. Im thinking Sinn but .... What would you buy?

Okay, this is somewhat above your price bracket (in the neighbourhood of 2 grand), but I've been very happy with my Tudor 79170:

And the Tudor will hold its value.

In the $1,400 range, I would look at a 60s Heuer Carrerra or Autavia. They hold their value very well, and their prices seem to be rising. You also can't go wrong with a nice Omega Speedmaster Moon Watch. It's a classic.

Chris, I picked up that Tudor for A$2550 (US$2002), although most of the others I've seen online have gone for higher prices. It's a case of keeping watch and waiting for one to turn up at the right price.

My Tudor came with a leather strap instead of the bracelet, so it took me a while to find the right 78360 bracelet on eBay. I eventually got one from Italy for about $200, but it was so old and over-polished I had to send it for restoration. Next week I'm getting the right set of 589 end links for the bracelet and voila, it'll be back to original specs.

I'm in Melbourne, and at one boot sale a watch seller told me about a watch dealer in a suburb called Glen Waverley. Now Glen Waverley is one of those neighbourhoods where Seiko is probably the last word in watches, and I popped in this store where this fellow had Subs, Sea Dwellers and Datejusts in the window which simply weren't moving an inch out the display shelf. I spotted the 79170, asked the owner for the price and he originally wanted A$3150 for it. I kept it in mind, went back two months later and to no surprise it was still there. I sat down, beat him down to A$2550 (by which time I was lightheartedly accusing the guy of robbing me and he in turn accused me of taking food out of his children's mouths ), slapped down the cash and walked out with it.

Actually, the last time I was there three months ago, he had a 79180 (with the tachymeter bezel instead of the 1-to-12 rotatable bezel), and knowing him, it'll still be there.

By the way, I love that bezel on that first Sinn - that's the way a countdown bezel should really be marked!
