Trade Sprite for Daytona?

Picked up a Sprite this past Winter and it does not speak to me. Looking at options I thought about maybe trading for the Daytons 116520 with the white dial. What do you guys think? Looking at the values I may be able to do a straight up trade?

Not that familiar with this version of the Daytona. What is the bezel made of? Does it scratch easily?

You should if you don’t have a Daytona. This bezel is steel and is prone to scratches and will lose value if polished because the numbers will be less legible. Congrats in advance

Thanks fireo! I have a Speedmaster Triple Date with a similar gold bexel and I've ceen many with the faded numbers. That is what I was afraid of. May have to hold out for the ceramic bezel?

Frankly, it's better to choose the steel bezel and avoid polishing it. I definitely prefer it that way. Currently, I own the ceramic versions in both platinum and steel panda, but they don't compare to the steel. I'm currently looking to buy the black steel model; it's truly incomparable.

From what I've seen the Sprite's are trading for $18k, give or take, but the trend is down.

Is it just that it’s a destro?
Is it the colors?
Do you not like the GMT function
Do you own another GMT?

Since you already have another chronograph I’m not sure I’d do the trade.

As others have mentioned, the metal bezel Daytonas are not scratch proof. If that's a major concern, perhaps add some cash and look for a black 116500?

I'm conflicted with this conundrum. I'd normally choose the GMT2 over the Daytona, but the LHD just doesn't work for me. I don't love steel bezels & IMO ceramic is superior. IDK, man, you've got two "only-a-mother-could-love" watches on your hand I guess I'd choose the Daytona, just because it's situated in the correct direction.

The more I think of it that may be the best option.

I do have two other Rolex GMT's - the Batman and Rootbeer - and the Tudor GMT with the Opaline dial. It is not the GMT, it is mostly the left hander. I like the color which is unique in my collection, but I still have not gotten used to the crown at the 9:00 position.

My 2 cents -
I own numerous Daytona’s (a few SS, a few PM) so this my experience -
A - On a servicing from Rolex 10 years ago, they did replace a scuffed up bezel and it has not diminished value.
B - The bezels can get scratched up - but if you’re careful it will be a non-event.
C - $18-20K Box and Papers for all stainless Daytona circa 2003-2015….

I would bet your trade is going to be closer to $14k as high $17k is retail for the VTNR preowned. What ever you do, don’t settle on the Daytona model and get exactly what you want when you make the move.

Personally I would not recommend trading up to the Daytona, especially if you need to fork out further cash for the trade. The VTNR is unique on its own, and you will certainly regret down the road upon discontinuation of the VTNR. Furthermore, I assume you got the VTNR at retail, why exchange for one that is older and provenance unknown?

A lot of people may dislike the VTNR now, but remember 40-50 years ago people were spiting on the Paul Newman... Look where those end up today.

Here's a pic of mine for side by side comparison. Personally I really like the VTNR for its quirky characteristic.

The bezel on that Daytona is made of stainless steel, which is quite durable and less prone to scratching compared to materials like ceramic or aluminum. If you're considering a trade, it's worth looking into the values to see if a straight-up trade is feasible.

Just the opposite. Ceramic is considerably harder to scratch or make any mark on over polished ss. This is why Rolex (and every other manufacturer) uses it for their premium watches. Sapphire crystal and ceramic are very similar in their ability to resist scratching.

I have both in my collection. IMHO, The VTNR is more of a specialty piece. The white face 116520 Daytona is a timeless classic. The bezel will get some marks along the way but for me don’t reduce the experience of the watch. Seems like the Daytona is $4-5k more expensive for a decent full set.

If it’s trading for $18k to an end user, then expect any dealer’s trade in value to be much less (wholesale price). There wouldn't be an incentive for them otherwise

If the VTNR isn't clicking, then it's definitely ok to look at other options. Since you are unsure on which direction to go, I'd sell the VTNR outright and set the money aside until you find the right one.

I would keep personally and try to save for a Daytona …
I understand you have no connection so if the case and you want a Daytona there is a big difference between 116520 and 500 .. the bezel especially, the age, the bracelet and size .. I had same decision to make over 116520, 116500 and 126500 - for me the 116500 was the best choice, 116520 is lovely but if bezel scratches and polished number indices can be removed and those indentations get smaller.

You will need to add a lot of money for this trade, 8-10k for good condition of 116520.

Sprite is a unique timepiece, I would rather keep it and wait for brand new Daytona at your AD.

No straight up trade in my opinion.
You did pick their lowest cost 116520 - missing a link, and not a complete set.

If you do this then consider a better one and a complete set.

You will get 12-13K offered as trade-in. In a comparable 520, expect to lay out $10.5 to 11.5K at SWE for a comp deal after tax.
