What’s your perfect 5 piece collection.

I have multiple watches that I consider personal pieces but they are all fairly similar. I’m in the process of thinning the collection out and getting more variety.

What would you consider 5 categories that are a must have.

I’m thinking a GMT, solid gold piece, Moonphase, minute repeater, and a skeleton.

What do you think?

I think in general the perfect five piece collection should include the following categories: Diver, GMT, Chrono, Dressy Watch, GADA Watch.

So here are mine:
1. SD43 (Diver)
2. 126710 BLNR (GMT)
3. Omega Speedmaster Professional (Chrono)
4. DJ41 - Jubilee/Smooth - Blue Sticks (Dressy Watch)
5. 216570 - Polar Explorer II (GADA)

This collection gives me a little bit of everything, dials of three colors (white, black, blue), something that is dressy enough to wear with a suit and something that is casual enough to wear with anything. The Speedy is classic and I feel that it is a great chrono as well. These watches are all SS which won't work for many, but I have never liked Two Tone or all Gold Watches so this is personal preference.

I completely understand that adding a Patek or Lange would be ideal, but honestly I don't think I'll ever spend that kind of money on a watch so I am being realistic with this list.

I like the idea of a travel, swimming/active, chronograph, gold watch and dress watch.

Currently working towards: BLNR, DaytonaC, BB58, DD40 YG and Revrso

Long term would like to add a Lange 1 moonhpase in pace of the reverse.

Only problem with my 5 is that I miss some fantastic watches out... 15202, Nautilus, patek grand complications etc... but as a 5 watch collection I think that's what I would go for, for now anyway

Its tough to look past rolex but i'll give it a shot. I'd want a mix of functions, dial colors and bracelets/straps to feel like i have something for most occasions.

#1- Sub Date LN (dive watch, brushed bracelet, black dial)
#2- GMT BLRO (GMT watch, jubilee bracelet, black dial)
#3- Daytona White (chrono, polished oyster, white dial)
#4- Datejust 41 (time-date, jubilee, blue stick dial)
#5- Something on a strap, any color dial, any function... maybe a patek 5296 sector dial :-), or a cartier drive extra-flat. Or a speedie, or a navitimer, or seiko 62MAS padi, or an apple watch... so many options haha.

1) Blro
2) DD 40 or 41 in YG
3) Patek 5711 Blue Dial
4) 116520 Daytona
5) 116618 Submariner

I would also add a Tudor or Omega for a cheaper watch

Not convinced I’m ever going to be ‘baller’ enough to have a minute repeater!

When it comes to putting together a perfect collection, you probably need to consider...

Attire/Occasion/Activity
Case material
Dial colour
Complications
Bracelet material
Brand diversity (including holy grail)
Modern/vintage/classics

For instance...

1. VC Patrimony Minute Repeater (white dial on alligator)
2. PP 5270 (salmon dial on Leather)
3. AP Royal Oak Ceramic Perpetual (Black dial)
4. Everose Rolex Daytona on OF
5. Birth year Omega Speedmaster on Nato

Haven’t given this much thought, but that’s where I’d start.

Apologies- I misread the OP and thought we were all sharing our ideal collections.

Thinking forward, though, I'd say a good collection should have five watches that all differ with regards to horological function.

For example, my ideal five would have:

1. GMT & date
2. Chronograph w/ slide rule bezel
3. Alarm
4. Split-second chronograph, perpetual calendar, moonphase
5. Chronograph w/ tachymeter

That collection spans many movements- but leaves out the tourbillon & minute repeater. I'd rather have a GMT/Alarm/slide rule, which would be far more useful than a minute-repeater or tourbillon (both of which are lovely but not really utilitarian).

This question can be answered on this forum by just mentioning the most hyped watches until they are not. LOL

* BLRO
* SS Daytona
* Blue Dial SKyD
* BLNR
* LV

Thats every dick and harrys top 5 around here. LOL - well maybe not everyone but 90% of members. Its so repetitive and boring.

I think you can do it in 3.
A beater watch, a sports watch and a dress watch.
Just plug in your favorite model for each category.
