No, certainly not clowns, although the plaid pants are a bit daring IMO.


I think a Stainless Sub with black bezel looks "ok", and perhaps entirely appropriate, if it's your only watch.

But is it the preferred look? I think any of the gents pictured above could be more suitably paired with a simple gold watch on a strap. Opinions will vary, and I'd rather think of these as suggestions moreso that rules, but let's agree that good taste requires that the watch should never become the center of attention.






Edit: Lindsey Vohn could wear a dirty sweat sock on her wrist and it would look great.

In polite circles, wearing a Sub with a suit would be considered a sartorial solecism. I wear a dress watch when the occasion demands, even though I would rather wear my Sub.

Huh, maybe to the 15 people that comment on watch forums and some fashion bloggers and inhabit some strange alternative reality where it's still 1957 for purposes of what's on your wrist (but not for any other men's fashion item-- just watches and only watches), but about 75% of well dressed men seem to disagree in 2017.

Especially since males dress in exactly the same way as they did in the 1950s. Respect the rules!

I think most people won’t really care that you’re wearing a Diver with a suit. The sub (depending on color) looks good in any situation. If you will be with the hoi polloi who will pay attention, then use a strict dress watch.

I don't see anything wrong with wearing the watch that you want. Rules are made to be broken, and honestly who cares what anyone thinks. If you feel comfortable with it, you should do it.

I have zero dress sense, except am housetrained enough to know Just Put On Everything that the ladies layout for me when it comes to Dress Up occasions. My only say in the matter is which car we drive, which watch I wear & which pen I carry.

At the do... hell yeah, I'm bored.

With boredom comes scanning the horizon for interesting things that catch my eye... usually what other bored guys are similarly choosing to wear. 20yrs ago it used to be "hey is that the latest Ericsson T38? wow so tiny!" but these days everybody has boring smartphones. Few ppl carry a nice FP either, especially to garden weddings. And cars... well, everything fresh from showroom we'd know all about from Internet already & nobody bothered modding their ride anymore so nothing interesting to converse about much there.

Which leaves only watches.

And yeah, id be lying if I said I wasn't secretly hopeful at spotting some interesting pieces at a dressup do, because I do. best spotting time is usually at a garden reception at the buffet... watches peek out from cuffs when you reach for food, I don't have to go staring below your belt line.


Already planning ahead for next do... haven't yet evicted the moths from the tux but already picked my piece, just undecided whether to jazz it further with its display back on or leave solid.

Even if I don't find any WiS to chat with, I'll have enough to entertain myself for a few hours if needs be.

I would say the exact opposite. I think they paved the path to make it fashionable, aspiring and sort of cool to do so...

Well, this has been discussed just about a month ago. Unless the event doesn't requires a strict dress code that mentions the timepiece (Which would be to wear none), you can go with whatever you want. Be it a orange rubber band if that's what you like.

I don't think a Sub is a good choice, The bezel will tear up fine dress shirts and I have trouble getting a large watch under my cuff. For me I am looking at trading one of my Rolex for a JLC Reverso which exudes understated elegance.
