My son lives in Brooklyn and commutes into Manhattan daily wearing his two-tone Datejust - which is not subtle - and has never had a problem. His girlfriend lives in Tribeca so he is traveling the Subway all hours of the day so he has seen it all. He is as close to a native as a New Yorker can get, so he does nt look like a tourist. As somedoct else said, situational awareness is essential.

If you wear it, you will be deader than a Boeing whistleblower.

You can always take it off and put in your pocket..
I would not. It's safer on your wrist. I believe you're more likely to be pick-pocketed on the train or someone shoulder-checking you & happily finding a watch when they want to get a wallet than you are to be mugged for your watch.

Be smart. It's a big city. You're not a country bumpkin rube who doesn't understand how crime works. Wear sleeves. I'll be in NYC in May. I wear long sleeves (business) & when I'm on the train, I don't reach up for the overhead handhold with my left (watch) hand.

Thank you! I realized that I said "in May" when we are currently in May. I meant to say later this month. Either way, Smurf. It attracts 1% of the attention than my TT DJ36 does.

In the diamond district my husband had maybe 5 people ask to buy his Smurf.

I’d wear it.

I’m bringing my GMT BLNR to Europe in a few months. I’m wearing it everywhere I go.

But admittedly, I’m not so sure about the subway system in NYC. It seems like there is always something bad going on…

Sounds like a great trip, Central park is a fantastic area to stay in. As for wearing your pepsi while taking a subway, NYC is generally safe, especially in well traveled areas like Central park and on a subway.

I'm not a tourist, a Hassidic Jew or Italian gold merchant, so I don't venture into 47th St. often.

(Mods, before you jump to the infractions, as a native New Yorker, the aforementioned three demographics are truly the only people who spend time in the Diamond District. It's factual, not anti-anyone.)
