I don’t feel 36mm belongs on a guy. Just my 0.02. If I saw a guy with a 36mm DD, I’d think they just didn’t want to pay the money to get a normal sized one. That’s fine...but counter productive when buying a model like the DD.

Of course, this is a generalisation and there are some who wear watches that look great for their wrist size.

I find it bizarre.
Also everyone always takes pics of their watches from above. This is a poor angle to take pics from because it looks directly down on the watch and makes it look huge. I could put a 30mm watch on and take a pic from an angle that would make it look like the lugs hang over my wrists (which are 7 inches).

It’s his opinion but a tasteless one. But I do like 36 mm for formal watches

I do not have a daydate, but I do have two Tudor datedays at 36mm. I also have Panerai, one of which is 47mm.

Wear what you like, what looks good to you - unless you require validation from strangers.

Never understood why people feel compelled to comment on the choices of others.

I and many here apply the lugs edge test, if the lugs' edges fall within your wrist edges then you are OK, if they spill over then maybe not, but ofc it is all about freedom of personal expression.

I agree we're all about freedom and personal expression, which I why I feel comfortable mentioning that this test makes many guys look look they are wearing dad's oversized watch.

There are better things to worry about than if a particular model of watch is too big or not....

Works the other way too, can often look too small with so much skin showing.

to each their own but personally it depends on the style and I too feel the larger datejust and day date models look a bit out of place on smaller wrists and prefer the 36mm model, but realize that is possibly because of what I have seen for decades now as being the standard.

A history lesson message to the OP....

The DD36 was created in 1956. At that time a 36mm watch was considered large. Over time, the market went to 40-42mm as the standard sized case and Rolex was ultimately left behind. In 2008 Rolex launched the DD2(41mm) to compete with Breitling, Cartier, AP and many others. They quickly realized the symmetry on the DD2 wasn’t right and launched the DD40 and totally got it right in two ways. First, they had a larger PM case watch that was perfect in design and symmetry. Second, they had modernized with the times......other than the Asian markets, the DD36 had not been a huge seller for Rolex for 15 years.

So you’re yearning for the old days of 36mm being the standard size - when the reality is that 40-46mm is the true luxury market size. And despite your belief that “40mm looks terrible”, DJ41 is now by far the biggest seller in the Rolex universe - and I’m sure you’ll infringe on the buyers happiness and claim that it looks garish or unsightly. Please stop, smell the coffee, and realize that the entire watch world is now larger case watches - whining and opining that 40mm isn’t the right size makes you look “completely out of touch”....

Looks great to me. Your Sub is bigger than that DD40. Does the Sub look awkward and huge on you?

Preferences on watch sizes are an individual choice. Each of us are free to offer an opinion but that opinion does not have to put others down. Some things just don't work for each of us. I own two DD II's and a 7.5-7.75 inch wrist. I think they fit great and I like the look. I also like the DD40 and the 36mm model. To each their own.

Appreciate your .02 OP. I'm assuming that means the Sub is too big on everyone as well?

All jokes aside, I think the DD40 looks quite good on most people (particularly me!)

Not sure if you follow any current fashion trends, but large watches are popular and desirable. If you don’t, small watches probably go great with a t-shirt tucked into the baggy dad jeans and white high-top sneakers.

For the vast majority of DD40 and DD2 owners... it’s too big for you.

Some may say that the 36mm DD you own looks far too small on a man’s wrist, who are we to judge either way. :shrugs:

If I saw a man wearing a 36mm DD I’d think he’s got a great watch and wouldn’t care about the rest. Your post is ridiculous.

First off...why would you start a thread like this
But then...I’ve seen many of your negative comments throughout TRF threads, so it makes sense. I’m not commenting on your statement, which is ridiculous for quite a few reasons.

But, I’ll make my own comments that may or may not sound ridiculous to you or others. NOT THAT I BELIEVE any of these comments I’m about to make, as they’re not true...but I’ll say them in the context you may find...annoying, offensive, etc....

-36mm DJ’s look too small on a mans wrist
-A DJ having more wrist presence than a DD...? Are you f’n kidding me?
-couldn’t think of a less versatile watch than a 5 digit GMT, and they look away to big on you

James Gandolfini was a pretty sizeable guy and wore a 36mm DD throughout the entirety of the Sopranos.

Did not look out of place at all.

I think the size would take a bit of getting used to on your own wrist but I think it would look good. Having said that I also like the 40mm reference.

OP, this is stupid. And to top it all off, you grabbed someone else's screenshot of a watch they enjoy that looks good on them IMO, and use it in your post to say something negative. SMH

100% agree. A "dress" watch should not be that big. IMHO... with that said the 40 was an improvment over that hideous DD II
