I like a big barrel on a pen too. I currently use my Mantblanc Le Grande ball point daily. It fits well in my hand.

I realized that I have a pile of older Cross pens somewhere. Always fun to read about other collections!

Faith, I actually just got back into FP's since my childhood, when my wife bought me a MB Chopin, which I believe is equivalent to a 145. All that to say, I'm not exactly sure what I like yet, but I do like that pen!

It has a fine point, which I do like. One thing about fountain pens, it takes some getting used to writing with one after years of not doing so. There's a completely different technique required versus ballpoints and the like.

It is beautiful and a lot of fun to write with. Pens are like watches, once you start heading down that slippery slope, it's hard to stop.

Seriously though, I would encourage you to pop into your local pen shop and try a few fountain pens, there is something wonderful in writing with them and you don't have to spend a fortune! You can get a Lamy safari for around $40 that writes beautifully and can use bottled ink. Over the years you would save money over the bic's!

Sorry, once one get's into fountain pens you find us all trying to convert folks over to them
What do you do with the expensive pen once it's out of ink? I guess there are probably replacement parts for that?
The only issue I have with pens is that I am very picky as to what type I like writing with, I don't like the ink to flow too freely, I don't like thick pens, blah blah blah.

I know that Aadil likes pens though, and has a few Mont Blanc's that he has been eyeing for a while.

Ahh, Aadil likes pens, good half the work of convincing done
You can get a fountain pen that takes both cartridge (little plastic tubes that contain the ink) and bottled ink, when you unscrew the barrel of the pen you will see a screw down plunger which is used for bottled ink, you just put the nib in the bottle of ink turn the screw and the ink fills the plunger. I write huge amounts and a bottle lasts me nearly a year!
The other fun thing about bottled ink is that it comes in so many colours, check this link out to a firm in the states that sells ink, it is availible up here as well!
http://www.privatereserveink.com/

You might want to start with something cheap like the Safari I mentioned as it writes well and is easy to use(comes in some funky colours as well!)
If you are used to using bic then start with a medium nib. You might find the pen a little thick in girth though.

This is a link to a friend of mines pen site, he has a lot of experience in pens and his recommended stores always come up trumps for me, this page is one that is in Calgary.
http://www.marcuslink.com/pens/review2a.html

If you need any more help pm me and I would be glad to assist.
One last thing, going to a pen store is a good idea as they will allow you to try out different fountain pens!

Yes! Although would probably be a bad thing for me, as I KNOW I would re-start collecting again!

You are so right, writing with a fountain pen makes one slow down, it is so relaxing! I have never joined a club in my life till I met the good folks at my local pen club, such a relaxing pleasent atmosphere, heck even FPN feels peaceful to visit!

Collecting, be it pens, watches or any other items starts out innocently enough. We see something we like, we purchase it, and join a forum to discuss our objects of interest. Through pictures and discussions with those who share our interests, we are introduced to different models, many of which we'd like to covet. Before we know it, and quite insidiously, we turn around to discover that we ourselves have become collectors. Several members commented that they are not into pens, but would be interested in learning more. It will be interesting to see how many of these "innocents" turn into pen fanatics like the rest of us. It's contagious and there is no cure . . . only more pens.

Writting with a work of art adds something special to everyday chores like signing your name. The nibs on some of the fountain pens are truly amazing to look at and admire especially the limited edition pens.

You know when you have been bitten when you get a display case and travel cases...

That applies to pens as well as watches!

My wife got me the display case and has been filling it up since!

I am the one that bought the travel case. Don't want one of my little beauties to get scratched.

Not a bad idea since a lot of watch folk are pen folk as well.

Since this is what I do for a living, I would not try to give jaded opinions of pens.

Yes! If anything, a forum for pens would show that this planet still has people who like to write. I am impartial to Cross fountain pens because they're affordable to collect and easy to enjoy. Also, did you know that fountain pens are easy to write with? In fact they're so easy that many therapist recommend fountain pens for patients who have issues with hands or wrists.

An e-mail is nice but nothing beats a thank you note written on a good paper with a good pen (nice handwriting is a plus too).
