Basically fixed bezel on the EXP II vs rotating bezel on the GMT II.
Same movement etc... The exp II can be had with a white face.

Not that I'm splitting hairs here, but I believe the EXP II is 39mm across and the GMT II is 40mm. Some may notice it, some may not.

Spot on, Paulie....the Exp-II is actually 39 mm, although Rolex just claim it to be 40 mm like the rest of their sports range.

Expl II & GMT II

The GMT Master II was made for Pilots.
The Explorer II was made for cave dwellers.

just a little confused then (cause on my GMTII you can't easily move the red 24 hour hand) where as a friend who has the EXPII assures me he can easily move his 24 hour hand. what about on yours?

The 3185 movement has the quick set for the hour hand and the 4th hand rotates around with the crown. Same on both watches. There is no difference or modification to the 3185 movement for the GMT.

Hi Andy,

There seems to be some confusion here. As Johnny stated, both watches have the same 3185 movement with identical functions.

So if you unscrew the crown and pull it out to position 1, turning the crown in either direction will move the small hour hand (the one with the Mercedes logo on it) in the direction you turn the crown. In this position the watch is still working.

The RED 24-hour hand can only be moved after you've pulled the crown out completely and the watch has STOPPED. Then when you turn the crown you will find the long minute hand start to move and accordingly the RED hand will move. You CANNOT move the RED hand independently like you can the small hour hand.

Note: The RED hand makes ONE revolution every 24 hours.
The small hour hand makes TWO revolutions every 24 hours.

Cheers - JJ

They are both identical movements, Johnny is 100% correct. (That was painful to admit!!)

JJ

that was my point - I own the GMT so know how it performs with it's bi-direction 24 hour bezel and the 4th hand

but I was led to believe by a EXPII owner that he could independantly move his 4th hand and this made sense as i knew the bezel on the EXPII was fixed

Ask him which one he counts as the 4th hand. If he calls the mercedes hour hand the 4th hand, he's right. It is easy to move - by pulling the crown out to the second position. The rest of us call the red hour hand the 4th hand. That one only moves with the minute hand. And that's the same on both watches.

I thought the newest GMTs were able to move the 4th red hour hand w/o moving the minute hand?

Interesting point there, Mrdi. Wonder what the extra special feature of the new 3186 movement is....this is the one which has been fitted in the 50th Anniversary GMT-II.
