Arizona Appraisal.. Really?

So I called the only AD in Tucson, AZ to ask about appraisal for my Rolex watches. They tell me they will do it, but it will take 3-5 weeks since they have to send it to their headquarter offices in Seattle. It will also cost me $100-$300 per watch.
Is it only me or is that really just plain stupid?
Any other suggestions?

I assume you need an appraisal for insurance purposes.
I don't know much about insurance, but I would have thought that an insurance company could easily determine whether your stated value was in the ballpark for a given watch and quote an appropriate premium.

My insurance company said anything valued at over $10,000 needed an appraisal. Not sure if this is standard. Beyond that, I can't offer any insight - none of my watches are that expensive.

Did you buy your watches from an AD or a grey dealer? My watches that I bought from my AD came with an insurance appraisal with pictures of each watch. They didn't have a problem appraising my grey dealer watches at no charge either. It sounds like you need a new AD or try an independent appraiser.

I would write an appraisal for you no charge but I have to see the watches in person, too bad you are not in LA :(

Ask if they will accept a letter from Rolex. If your watch is under warranty Rolex will give you a letter essentially saying the watch is real and then they will put the dollar amount of the watch. Not quite an appraisal but it might work. It worked. Jewelers mutual accepted it for mine.

IMHO some appraisals are little more than daylight robbery,as most just look up the retail price replacement, and know very little about the items they are appraising.

Actually I'm looking at using Jewelers mutual. They are the reason I want the appraisal in the first place.
Could you please provide more info about the process?
Cheers!

If it comes to that, I'll pay you a visit and bring the family along to Disney land. Two birds, one stone.

Well my wife handled most of it but she says she just simply followed the online process but they did accept the letter from Rolex just fine. For my wife's engagement ring we did get an appraisal that we got for free from the jeweler that made the ring.

Thanks, I was actually referring to the process of obtaining the letter from Rolex...

Anyone knows how to get a letter from Rolex stating how much it's worth and such (for insurance purposes)?

I would get on the horn with other AD's. I would not trust my watches to the AD you spoke to, that's crazy.

I would never ship my watch around that much, find a local guy. We all know what most watches are worth anyway.

My AD did the one for my 1665 SD for $25 a few years ago. I would gather some info and personally visit a shop/AD and not ship those watches for this reason. Good luck.

I have appraisals done by regular jewelry shops in the past. Most of the time, they will do it for free. Especially if you are a good, or potential customer of theirs.

Agreed. When I took my Rolex in for an estimate, they valued it at $7000. When I dropped it off six months later, the value had risen to $9000. Too bad the real world value didn't do the same thing!

You have to keep up with the prices. I let my SD 1665 go too long, until USAA reminded me to take a look at my current coverage.

I'm in Scottsdale and asked a couple of AD about 2 years ago about appraisals and they both wanted $150 per watch and said it would be a week or two as they sent the watch off somewhere, I actually forget the specifics to be honest. I thought the price was silly and didn't follow up.

Not to hijack this thread but here's an insurance question that I'm wondering about. My 14060M is no longer avaliable, how would it be appraised as it is not able to be replaced with a new one? Would it be appraised at the closest model as a 114060M? Just curious...
