Have asked on VRF, but wondering if any of the experts here can shed anymore light...

I came across this article.
It's the first time I've seen or heard anything of this before - what are peoples thoughts?
Is this a genuine Rolex dial, and if so, surely there would be more than one? Are there other one-offs?
Is there any more info on this "unicorn"?

Very questionable, obviously. If the story is true, why is there no paperwork backing up the claim? There should at least be letters with the client's request and Rolex's agreement to customize the dial. A true collector and watch lover would have kept any correspondence.

I'd view this no differently than if I asked a dial-expert watchmaker to carefully add red to "Sea-Dweller" on my 16600. Voila! I'd also have a rare single-red 16600.

I own a single red sea dweller service dial. it is in a 4.4mm service case with a bracelet from 2008.

Agreed. I would be very surprised that Rolex would do a one-off, and if they did, that there wouldn't be any supporting documents?
Perhaps they thought it best not to show in the article...?

In any case, it does look excellent.

While I agree its not what I would expect their quality to be, the white over red is just like the early Redsub dials ;)

Is this article meant to begin paving the way for the sale of this watch by establishing its existence and subjecting it to some scrutiny, inviting comments pro and con, so that when it hits the auction block a few hopeful buyers will, at the very least, be willing to roll the dice on it?

For me - Molested post-sale dial (with wispy red 'over-spray' so too speak, and cleaning up marks of too much red too).

Rolex would not do that quality.

For me, that reduces value of watch by the dial about £1200 or so.

To me, this is like the Tiffany dials. Without the paperwork, its just another dial with aftemarket printing on it

No documentation, no proof that it's a genuine Rolex. This is the author's attempt to get it sold at a fair price in the event that it turns up in the grey market. IMO
