5070r or 5070j
My new 5205r isnt growing on me - wears very small and sits quite high - even my wife who is pretty oblivious to watches commented it seems small on my 8" wrist.
Am thinking about trading (along with some other pieces and $) for a 5070 - either the white dialed r or the black dialed j. Any thoughts on which one of these two? As an alternative I might just wait for the rose gold datograph up-down to be available. Appreciate the boards advice. |

I generally prefer rose gold to yellow, but in this case I really love the j and black dial

RG Dato I think gets my vote... 41mm and 13mm thick. Will definitely work well on an 8" wrist

I vote this....
While I love the Datograph and think it would be a gorgeous piece in rose gold. Having said that I feel like the 5070 is one of the best Pateks ever produced. So I voted with my wallet :) Best of luck in whatever you decide!

Try to hold these watches side by side. The Patek is a beautiful Swiss watch, refined and well designed. But the Lange is something else, literally. It is so well built, so over-engineered, so well thought out...that the difference is very obvious.

Neither, I say ALS Datograph up/down, in platinum, cheaper than the 5070, and has the big date feature that I love, plus the most beautiful chrono movement in the market, here are a few pics, you just need to buy it right but you can get one for around 65K BNIB

God, those pics make me feel sooo envious..... Then I remember I'm wearing my 1815 chronograph which has the exact same rear end.

and what if you don't like all these blue screws, gold chatillons, red jewels … I won't say I don't like that movement but imo it just has way too much color. Just give me a movement without all these colors, I'm more happy with black polishing, geneva stripes, perlage, etc. The dial … sorry to say but imo it's a mess So we have Roman numbers ( I, II, VI, X ) but also numbers like we see on most watches ( on the tachymeter 60, 80, … till 400) To make it even more incoherent we have baton markers at 1-5-7 and 11. and it just doesn't stop, lets put 2 dots at 6 and 9 And another thing, but this is very personal, I don't like a date on a watch so definitely not a big date :-) A dial is imo better without a hole in it, doesn't matter it is for a date or a tourbillon. No, I'm not a big fan of the datograph this is a lange Double split and this a Patek split second for me the Patek please

I am actulally glad to read this thread. I have loved the 5205 ever since I tried one on but have held back. I am cooling slightly for some reason. Anyway to your question, the RG is my choice.

I agree for me if to consider the 5070 it's the platinum, the PT plus that blue dial but the fact that it misses a date is a clear negative point for me...

I can understand if you don't like all those colors, ALS uses an insane quantity of rubies on their movements, one of them has 69 jewels. So of course the Patek is a beauty but apart the colors, which I personally like a lot, the ALS has much more depth, it looks like a 3D maze, the Patek looks almost flat compared to it. For a split second chrono I would also choose a Patek over a Lange, I only like a few Lange, I love the Datograph, the Datograph perpetual, both of which must, IMO, be in platinum, and the Zeitwerk, some other models I find nice but not overly excited by them, and many are not my cup of tea. But if we are talking normal chrono, the 5070 and a Datograph, which by the way are both iconic pieces but each has platinum as THE reference metal for these 2 models, I might take the Patek if they were priced equivalently, but the Patek is much more expensive, and the Datograph has the big date, I need a date on my watches and I love the ALS big date with the pusher to set the date, so clearly for me the ALS. About the split of course if you compare the 5370 to the ALS split, no question whatsoever, the Patek wins hands down, in any case for me Patek is ahead of ALS, ALS does, IMO, come before Patek on the chrono question with the Dato |

These watches have to be held side by side to make this kind of choice. The answer will be obvious to you. Unless you choose a watch based on manufacturer pics on the web lol.

I don't even look at pics when I pick a watch, a simple description is enough, ok sometimes you are a little surprised at the result but

There is a very nice component of depth in the movement of the Lange however it comes at the expense of a thicker watch and for me runs somewhat contrary to the quest of fine watchmaking in that creating a thinner movement is generally a more difficult task.

Either the Dato up/down or the 5070 will wear perfectly with 7.5-8" wrists. As far as choosing between the two, now that becomes more complicated. The 5070 is more collectable, I don't think many will argue with that, but the price reflects its rarity. In addition, the 5070 is a "simpler" chrono, if that's the right word for it. By comparison, the Dato up/down offers a power reserve indicator and the large date feature, which for my preference is very useful and gives it the thumbs up for better value. The new dimensions of the up/down version improved the diameter / thickness ratio of the original and offer perfect proportions, IMO. ( Note: nothing wrong with the original, as it's a classic, I just think the new, larger diameter offers better proportions.)
The pictures of the new RG Dato with black dial looks fabulous and I can't wait to see one in person. With all things considered and needing to choose just one, I'd go for the RG Dato. |
