I was going in the bigger direction for a while, and then got my first Daytona, which changed everything for me. While it is listed by Rolex as a 40mm case, we all know it's more like 38mm, which I think fits my 7.5" wrist great. It's now harder to wear big watches.

I'm starting to think it's less of a size thing and more of a proportions/design thing. There was a lot more function than form put into design of watches back in the day as they were still somewhat considered tools. Even the "design-first" Genta type watches still had to be designed with a great deal of comfort in mind as people actually wore their watches back in the day.

Basically every single sports Rolex released in the 50s still looks good despite some being quite small. OTOH, the Speedy Pro Moonwatch has always been 42mm which is huge for the standards of its time but also looks awesome.

Allows more selection of beautiful pieces vs being restricted for no valid reason.

I am considering adding back a vintage 36 mm DJ. I think 40-44 mm is my sweet spot. I do have a 45 mm Breitling that I enjoy. I had a 47 mm CFB TravelTec that I sold because it was too big! I have a 7.75-8" wrist.

I think for vintage/dressier pieces 34-36mm is great but on sports models it feels like I’m wearing my wife’s watches.

This Cellini is 34mm and I dig it. But my DJ is a 41 (really closer to 39mm) and I wouldn’t go smaller.

My Rolex is a 36mm DJ and I love it. But I have to admit, I sometimes do wish I went for the larger size, only because I prefer bigger watches.

My wrist is 6.75" and my BB58 at 39mm is borderline too small, in my opinion, I couldn't wear 36mm.

Looks great…and especially if you wore it dressed up with a suit. I’m a big fan of the 36mm and usually think it’s best up to 7.25ish but you seem to be able to pull it off.

It always depends on the size of "each" wrist
