A couple pieces of driving advice that have stuck with me:

When you get frustrated and you're about to honk your horn, imagine your grandmother is the other driver ~ my father

Never, ever, ever run over a piece of debris, no matter how innocent it looks. ~ my cousin

Here's one from my all time favorite old school cop show, those 60's police drama's were the best...

Criminal: You made a big mistake cop, and I'm not gonna pay for it.
Joe Friday: What are you going to do pal, use a credit card?

Love it

From the film "Rushmore."

Max Fischer: I like your nurse's uniform, guy.

Dr. Peter Flynn: These are O.R. scrubs.

Max Fischer: Oh, are they?

One that I always gave the rookies- Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.

gun side away, distance = time = options and max out your deferred comp, stay single and get snipped.

Or you can just find a woman that you hate, buy her a house, give her half of your pension (like so many cops) and skip the whole marriage part.

A few quotations from Tom Waits:

“You can learn a lot about a woman by getting smashed with her.”

“A gentleman is someone who can play the accordion, but doesn't.”

“The world is a hellish place, and bad writing is destroying the quality of our suffering.”

“The big print giveth and the small print taketh away. ”

(See my sig for one of my faves, from Douglas Adams)

I've seen more that one or two get caught up in things on duty that they shouldn't have and should have known better, live and learn I guess. I can think of three right off the top of my head that no longer have the job or the pension because of on the job "activities" that should have waited until after the shift.

Hahaha,
I only lost 20% of my pension as well as my house but it still sucked! Divorce is so prevelant in the LE profession. I've been blessed with a great pension because of excess money in the 80's and early 90's. Right now even after she gets her 20% and figuring in less taxes I'm taking home 101% of my base salary, not too many guys out there can say that.

If you don't do it excellently, then don't do it at all. Because if it's not excellent it won't be profitable or fun and if you're not in the business for fun or profit then what the he// are you doing there at all?

That's funny you should mention that Larry. I still to this day take my belt off 1/2 block from where ever I'm going. I still have to sit in the back of where ever we eat with my back against the wall so that I can watch who comes in the door. Holly is so used to it now even if she's seated where I "need" to be she just gets up without saying anything so that I can take her place. Old habits die hard I guess. Stay safe.
