My mother in law wants to sell her 30+ year old gold ladies' Datejust. My father in law gave it to her when they were married. She has worn it everywhere, playing tennis, etc. Last year the watch just stopped, so she sent it to the Dallas RSC for a complete overhaul. The watch is now perfect, but the original Jubilee gold band is almost completely worn (beyond "stretch"--it just collapses into an unstructured pile). While the band still technically works, it is not safe to wear any more.

She has not worn the watch since it came back from the RSC, because of the band. She and her husband are now long-retired, on a fixed income, and they would prefer to spend their money on their grandkids rather than on a new gold band (a decision I agree with). Even though I already have a Rolex, we offered to buy the watch to keep it in the family.

So, fellow TRF members, what is a ladies' gold DJ (unusable original gold Jubilee band + fluted bezel) worth? It cannot be worn without a new band.

Also, is it worth it to buy a replacement gold band and keep the old one, or see if Rolex will do a trade? Last year the RSC offered to give her a discount on a new gold band if she gave me her old one. It was still several thousands of dollars, though, so she passed. I do not know whether it is worth it to keep the original band and buy a new one, or give the old one to Rolex in exchange for a new one at the discounted price. That is, is there some inherent value in keeping a watch's original gold band, even if it is not usable (e.g, many prefer to keep a watch's original hands, regardless of condition)?

Well expect a replacement bracelet would cost as much as the watch would be worth at today's prices.And the old bracelet has a scrap gold value you could put the watch on a leather strap.

X2, I would put the watch on a leather strap and sell the band for it's gold value.

Wonderful you're wanting to keep the watch in the family. I like that. If you look around, you might be able to source a genuine used replacement in time. Maybe one of our members here will see this, and help you source one.

Thanks. After posting this, I found a post about rebuilding a worn bracelet, with new pins. Is that a viable option?

I don't know but somebody may come along, there is somebody good at repairing bracelets I've seen recommended here.

I read the post and thought leather and gold value so seems many think the same, if the watch is clean and a new bracelet it will have a new lease of life, and a loving family would do that for her and give her the money for the gold sale and let her give it back to the kids, it is a good news story either way
