How much is a Billion???

I don’t think people realize just how much a Billion is much less 700 billion or 11 trillion..let me break it down..

How much is a Million?
How much is a Billion?
How much is a Trillion?

What's the difference between a million, a billion, a trillion?

A million seconds is 12 days.
A billion seconds is 31 years.
A trillion seconds is 31,688 years.

A million minutes ago was – 1 year, 329 days, 10 hours and 40 minutes ago.
A billion minutes ago was just after the time of Christ.

A million hours ago was in 1885.
A billion hours ago man had not yet walked on earth.

A million dollars ago was five (5) seconds ago at the U.S. Treasury.
A billion dollars ago was late yesterday afternoon at the U.S. Treasury.

A trillion dollars is so large a number that only politicians
can use the term in conversation... probably because they
seldom think about what they are really saying. I've read that
mathematicians do not even use the term trillion!
Here is some perspective on TRILLION:

Trillion = 1,000,000,000,000.
The country has not existed for a trillion seconds.
Western civilization has not been around a trillion seconds.
One trillion seconds ago – 31,688 years – Neanderthals stalked the plains of Europe.

Million: 1,000,000
Billion: 1,000,000,000
Trillion: 1,000,000,000,000
Quintillion: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000
Sextillion: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
Nonillion: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
Centillion: 1 followed by 303 zeros

No I’m not Rain man..I got this info from somewhere else.

Really interesting info

You posted it in the wrong section though

Politicians rarely think what they are saying cause most of the times they are not the ones paying the bill it is the taxpayer that always pays the bill so they have to tell us how much we have to pay that's why they use terms like billion trillion etc.

EDIT: Thread was moved by one of the mods

I always knew the difference between million, billion and trillion in terms of zeros, but this really put it in perspective. Thanks - good post

In the UK and the rest of Europe 1 billion is 1,000,000,000,000. At least that's one thing that's bigger on our side of the pond.

Then what term do you use for 1,000,000,000 (which is termed a billion here in the US)?

I'm with Ayge...a billion in Europe is a million million. A US billion is a thousand million.

I don't care either way as it is vastly more than I will ever see.

I'd be happy if I could scrape together a tenner right now!

Thanks for that AJ !!

I was arguing with a guy for ages telling him that in the U.K a Billion is a Million - Million and the the US was 1000 Million.
We went on for that long - I actually began to doubt my own knowledge was correct !!

Big numbers.

I tried to find out how many atoms are in the universe.
One answer I found said 1 with 87 zeros after it.

And here's another big number: Googol. As many know it's a 1 with 100 zeros after it.

That looks like this:
10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 ,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,0 00,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

And a Googolplex is a 1 with Googol zeros after it.

If anyone can figure out a way to make that number comprehensible, I'd like to hear about it.

Pat's right. A google would be 1.0 x 10 ^100 (10 to the 100), but I don't think even scientific notation can handle a googolplex?!?

To really confuse you all, except for those who are or were part of the British Empire, this is the definition of a googly.

"A googly, or a "wrong'un", is a delivery which looks like a normal leg spinner but actually turns towards the batsmen, like an off break, rather than away from the bat.

Unlike a normal leg break, a googly is delivered out of the back of the hand, with your wrist 180 degrees to the ground."

So put some zeros behind that.
