Rolex cannot be happy if someone who wants a Datejust is steered towards an Omega instead. Lost £££. Lost customer. Good for the other brands though.

As a past retail salesperson, you try to sell what you have in stock if the customer is amicable and likes / loves it. Besides, we all know there's far more to mechanical timepieces than just Rolex, so this current situation is great and helps grow for the entire industry imho.

This is a true GREAT thing. Plus look at all the many truly talented independents who are now able to step away from typical conglomerates and go out on their own and suceed.

Win - Win

If Rolex didn’t keep the other brands afloat, nobody wants a Rolex because it wouldn’t be number one anymore.

Rolex understands this very well.

That would be correct if Rolex is merely playing the finite game. If the observation of Rolex's marketing strategy is a guide, I'd say Rolex is instead playing the infinite game. In the infinite game, the player is in it not only to stay ahead of the competition, but also to continue the play infinitely.

The finite game is myopic, the infinite game is forward looking. It is in Rolex's interest to keep the Swiss watch industry in play long term and I suspect Rolex knows this quite well.
