Patek Aquanaut 5164a vs new 5164g

I was planning to get the 5164a for use as a travel watch but sadly it got discontinued. I preferred its black dial, steel construction and 120m WR. Would you recommend I get the 5164a at $75k usd secondary price or try to get new 5164g from AD (50/50 chance), and why?

I like the 5164a better. I’d go grey and get that…seems you like the black version better anyway. Plus who knows if/when your AD might allocate you the new model.

Having owned the 5164, the Rolex Explorer II is a better travel watch.

I'd buy the 5164a. Steel PP are more interesting since they produce most of their watches in gold.

Gold is a soft metal, get scratches very easily compared to steel.

50/50 chance of getting allocated the 5164G at retail… crazy question to me on it even being a choice. Of course go with the 5164G.

But I agree with others, I’d pick a different travel watch. Personally I feel the aquanaut is too much watch for traveling. Doesn’t feel comfortable visiting unknown parts of the world wearing a watch that is highly recognizable by thieves and robbers. Whether you get the 5164A or 5164G, both to me have the same level of recognizability. If you’re traveling regularly to known parts that you’re comfortable with, then another reason to get the 5164G.

Some say WG will scratch more, but I haven’t found that to be the case.

Putting pricing and grey/retail aside, I’d much rather own the new 5164g. I think the blue grey coloring is done to perfection.

I’m not kicking the acier out of bed either though.

I always use the 216570 for travel. All brushed, non shiny bezel, doesn't get noticed, great lume..
5164a i scratched after a day in the office.

If I could get the 5164g at retail I’d do that over buying grey. If you had to buy both at grey pricing I’d get the 5164a

I have a 5164A and find it the perfect travel watch. I like the idea of the 5164G but when I tried one on, found it too “top heavy” for me, sorry to say.

I agree with this opinion, too. I'd take a new-from-the-store experience over grey if all else was equal.

I also would be a bit apprehensive to take this watch in whichever metal to parts unknown. LA to NYC, sure. But into Mogadishu, the Kalahari or Barcalona, no.

I only have less than 0.1% chance of getting the G from AD but I will go for it. The G is jaw dropping gorgeous and the only Aquanaut I ever want.

The white gold and blue does look more interesting than the black 5164. if you want lightweight, go for the 5167. it wears so comfy that it feels like it's not even there.

Why not get both? Buy the 5164a grey while you wait to see if you are allocated the 5164g, then if you are you can sell the 5164a and not damage your patek relationship since you bought grey.

I do agree with Michael, the 5164G is truly spectacular.

Still difficult to visually get over the phallic shaped GMT hand though.

5167a all the way. I’ve been in this dilemma before. I tried in a 5164a and it’s way too thick. It’s a cool complication but I hated the date wheel, too hard to read and clutters the dial. 5167a is class, thin and light. Beautiful dial. Extremely legible and better lume.

The funny thing is, 5164 lovers usually say it looks more interesting and balanced than having the actual date... but nothing about its actual legibility nor practicality.

The 5167 is so much more thinner, lighter, and you definitely won't accidently hit the buttons to the left.

The color of the new 5164G is just gorgeous but somehow the watch looks busier and less legible than the black dial 5164A to me.

That said, I'd love a 5968G in the new color. The green one is too loud for me and the dark blue a little boring in my eyes.

You have many top tier Pateks, does this not put you in a good position for the G? I would have thought it would.

I just received the popular 5231G last June and I think my goodwill with the AD has been reset. I will get the 5164G within weeks though if I buy the 5204G from them, or months with the 5236P. Problem is I don't quite fancy both the 5204 and the 5236 and that's the reason why I said my chance of getting the 5164G is 0.1% (being optimistic here because the real % is zero). Maybe if I like the 5164G enough I will get it from the secondary market.

Absolute truth. I've owned both together and the 5167a by far the better.

What a watch to get. I certainly understand where you are coming from now but wish you all the best in picking one up!

I remember people criticize the color of the dial on 5261R, saying how can Patek came out with this pale blue color....

I'm sure is the same blue gray on the 5164G & 5261R..

yeah it was me! And it is STILL me who thinks the 5261R colour is all wrong!
The placement of the dial is all over the place, the blue and RG combination looks uninspiring. One doesn't have to like the 5261R to like the 5164G.

Just look at them side by side - one has cohesive colour combination and a well arranged dial, the other looks like three eyed monster with the "12" at the top being cut off to accommodate the moon phase.

Also, why make it a "Luce" when almost 90% of customers asking for the watch are male? Make it a 40 like the 5164 or 42 like the 5968, give more space to the dial and make it a proper annual calendar, not an after thought with a poorly arranged dial!

Are we positive? One says blue gray and 64G says opaline blue grey
