Wimbledon Dial Design Meaning

Hey guys,

For the Wimbledon Dial DJ, why the 9 o'clock hour marker is not a Roman Numeral? What is the meaning of this unique design?

It's meant to add visual balance by being similar in appearance to the white date dial at 3:00. It also makes me want to claw my eyes out. YMMV

Yes, it’s always been a polarizing dial. I’m guessing more people love it than hate it, though. There is quite a long waiting list for any of its configurations.

Let me clarify: I think it's a beautiful dial and if not but for the lumed 9:00 marker I might own it today instead of my silver 36. It's just something my obsessive, OCD brain can't get past. That's certainly not gonna be the case for everybody, or probably even the majority. But I suppose that's why forums like this exist where we can spend our time discussing minutiae like this.

…i think I read or heard the white indices marker and the white date window in line kinda represents the headband on top the tennis net. Maybe I got that wrong..

Because the indices are not lumed Rolex decided to put a big luminated block at nine to orient the watch when reading the time at night.

And yes I think the positioning at nine is somewhat to balance out the date window. Not sure why this matters given they don't do this on any other watch that I'm aware of.

Dumb because you can orient the watch by the crown at 3:00.

I think the idea is when you look at the watch in the dark but don't immediately know which way is up. So picture your Wimbledon laying your your bed stand facing you. You wake up in a dark room and glance over. You don't know if you sat it down with the crown up or down. The nine marker would orient the watch for you.

That's the general idea I believe.

I did read that the green numerals are supposed to represent the green grass of the courts at Wimbledon. I am a fan, obviously, of both the iconic tennis tournament and the dial:

I think it is called the Wimbledon because they gave it to Roger Federer to wear at Wimbledon a few years ago, and thus the name. They advertised the hell out of it during Wimbledon with him wearing it.

That marker, of course, is lumed, and casts just enough light to see where the hands are, in the dark.
