Rolex Explorer 1016 "Frogfoot" Dial

Apologies if this has been asked before but is it just me or do pretty much most of 1016s that go up sale have a MK 1 "Frogfoot" dial?

Is there perhaps a particular reason for this?

It just seems strange that there are 5 matt dial variants (excluding service dials) yet the MK1 is the one that pops up majority of the time.

The Mark 1’s had a long lasting run

If it makes you feel better there are some variations with the frog foot.

I saw that too. That website is pretty much the only reliable source of info regarding 1016s that I've come across.

So I'm guessing it's safe to assume that the other matt dial varients are more sought after since they always seem to get snapped up the moment they go for sale.

I personally value them all the same, but below gilts of course.

Usually a reasonable spread 1-5 on C24.

C24 has three 1016s from SA. One is gilt and neither of the two matte dials are frog feet.

You could argue that an early matte might have more value or the fat lume 1016 but the main point is about the quality.

Good luck on your hunt.

I am based in South Africa & actually went to view the 1016s you mentioned (but I think you already knew that based on the fact that you specifically mentioned the SA listings).

The one is a service dial & the other a Frogfoot (even though the ad states a MK3 dial). They unfortunately did not have the gilt one on hand to show me.

I agree that quality is the most important factor but I was just wondering if I need to be more selective & patient in terms of which dial variant to pull the trigger on.

It has your location under your name. These are the two matte dials

I don’t think either are frog foot dials.

Sorry, I think my last message might have been a little confusing...

I have seen the two matte dials listings in person & the one ended up being a frogfoot (even though the images in the ad is of a MK 3 dial).

The other matte dial was a bit of an odd ball as the case was recently replaced by Rolex meaning that it is now a 4 million case series.

There is less than 2 days of this online auction which includes this frog foot:

I don’t know where it will end up but I think it looks good.
