Earlier this month I bought my first ever Rolex (36mm Day-Date w/ Ombre Blue dial) at the local AD, with the intent of building a relationship and eventually buying a Platona from them.

Well... turns out I couldn't stand the uncertainty of not knowing when I'd be given the opportunity to buy one. I was told that ADs get 1 or 2 of these per year - and what are the chances they'd give me the call and not someone else? At the same time, I was so obsessed with trying to acquire a Platona that my girlfriend started complaining that I wasn't spending enough time with her..

So for these reasons and more, I decided to bite the bullet over the weekend and buy grey. Was lucky to secure an unworn 2021 piece w/ stickers intact. And my local AD was gracious enough to offer to size it for me, despite the fact that I didn't end up buying from them. (I'm looking forward to buying more watches from them in the future)

Some of my thoughts so far:

Unsurprisingly, the watch is HEAVY. It makes the Day-Date feel light. And it makes my SS VC Overseas feel cheap. I'm still getting used to the weight.
I was on the fence between the Platona with brown sub-dials vs. diamond baguettes. Turns out I love the diamond baguettes. IMO, this dial looks far better in person than in photos.
My plan is to wear this daily, but I'm a bit nervous about being targeted for wearing such an expensive piece. My girlfriend thinks I should just wear it on special occasions.
I need to take a break from watch buying for a little while. It's been an aggressive few weeks - I'm just at the beginning of my watch collecting journey!

Hey now! There are still plenty of other Rolex references I have my eye on (Blue Sky-Dweller & Meteorite GMT are up there)... But yes, I'm also a bit torn between Nautilus and Royal Oak. I think my grail watch is a Royal Oak perpetual calendar in platinum, but those are ungodly pricey on Chrono24..
