Long page load times.

I've started showing up here after taking some time off and notice something.

Forum pages load very slowly. It seems that most of the page loads pretty quickly, but has to wait for http://www.connectingwatches.com/wat.../images/13.gif to load. It's awfully annoying, knowing the page is pretty much there, except for this piece from another site. Actually, I doubt it's the .gif, but it's some kind of communication with that site.

When you enter a thread using "go to first unread post", it looks like the vBulletin software waits for the entire page to load until it moves you to the the place on the page with the first new reply. That makes you have to wait for the conectingwatches piece to load.

It's not my computer or my network, as I've seen the same behavior on multiple boxes on multiple networks.

Maybe someone can get with that site admin and let them know that their link may be slowing down rolexforums?

Thanks.

John

Me too, sometimes so long to load a page the browser says the page is no longer there, click refresh a couple of times and it all comes good. almost each time I log in I have to do that IMO it is becoming worse, maybe just the additional bandwidth on the server as all these new members join?

Are you sure it's not your server or ISP? I have not had that problem on any of my computers, either at home, or the office, or any of my laptops. I always seem to get fast page loads, no matter where I am.

I have Verizon FIOS at home, Comcast cable in Boca, and Time Warner cable in Manhattan. We have multiple T1 lines (or T3 lines - not sure) at work.

It usually coincides with JJ's posting.... Wonder why?

I sometimes get a 'timed out' error.

The I hit refresh and the page loads.

Happens infrequently.

There may be reasons with your internet connection, but as far as the forum is concerned there maybe 2 possible reasons:

1. There are links to third party sites that count in rating the forum. Some of these sites can be a problem when they are down and the link is not receiving the information transmitted from the forum when a page is loaded. In that regard, I do on occasion remove the link. (as is the case at the moment with the link in the top left corner of the forum page.)
I've just removed a third party link that was not working, and I think this will make a difference

2. The forum has daily server backups at around 6-7pm AEST and during this time, the forum will be very unresponsive...even for me. But it's something that happens.

Otherwise, the forum should be loading smoothly and quickly. Thank you for raising this topic.

Definitely not my connection, as It's happened on several networks, including at work, where we're tapped into AT&T's Frame Relay (Data center onsite). Doesn't get much quicker.

The page itself loads pretty quickly, it's just the connecting watches that's been slow lately. Guess that's one of the counters you mentioned. It can take up to 12 or so seconds to complete that piece of the page load. I've noticed that some days it's not bad at all, but some days is the weakest link.

If you're removing the links when it gets super slow, that shows me you're aware and on top of it. Bet it hurts the forum's ranking if it's off the page too long though, so there's gotta be some balance.

Thanks for the response.

No worries, I'm not really worried about the forums rankings on these third party websites, as I believe many of the rankings are affected by false counters.

I'm more concerned that the forum functions properly. Its a real pain having a page not load quickly and properly.

I'll try and keep it loading properly. I had noticed the problem, but was hoping that the third party linking site would rectify the problem. As it hadn't done so in about a week now, it was time for me to take it into my own hands.

If the page takes long to load please look at the very bottom of the page in blue it will say:

Rolex Forums generated this page in 0.11628509 seconds (71.29% PHP - 28.71% MySQL) with 10 queries

Please copy and paste that here when there is a delay in page loading, this will determine if it is this sites server or an outside source.

The problem wasn't related to the server, but to the links pertaining to third parties, that were slowing down the load times.

I remedied that and it should be all good
