Visit to the Rolex Service Center - New Goodies

Brought my watch in for a full service. Great experience, and a number of goodies I wasn’t aware Rolex provided. It was done by my AD who’s an authorized Rolex service center.

A few things about the experience:

1. I don’t get the argument for no polishing. They polished it as part of the service and the watch looks great.

2. Came back with a nice little Rolex travel pouch.

3. When you do the full service, comes with 2 years of extended Rolex warranty. Even came with a Rolex card that is NFC enabled, and when you scan the warranty card it will pull up your specific watch with serial number and what service was done, along with when the 2 year warranty ends.

4. Full service charge was $800, and they changed out a few parts. Crown, crystal (mine had a small nick on the edge), and the barrel. Extra parts was around $200.

All in all, $1k seemed quite reasonable in my opinion.

Pictures below. Can you tell which picture was pre/post service polish?

This is cool. My first Rolex is 7 years old and I have been thinking about getting it serviced. I also would get it polished - mine is also a Datejust and it’s not some kind of rare collectible (plus I’ll never sell it because it was my silver anniversary gift from my wife).

How long did it take to get it back?

Would recommend it!

It took 4 weeks, though I also had the caseback engraved which added I believe a week.

Worth adding they also did some timing analysis which they showed me. My watch was averaging something like +2 seconds per day in 5 positions.

What is an "authorized Rolex service center"?
I remember hearing about NYC and Dallas as places where one sent a Rolex to be serviced.

From what I understand, and this is some info from the service center AD,

NYC and Dallas are Rolex run, and they can do “anything” as it’s Rolex.

An authorized Rolex service center is basically a service center that has been authorized by Rolex to perform the service. They are authorized based on caliber, and need to have someone trained/authorized in that caliber. If they don’t have someone, even though they’re authorized. They would then send it off to the Rolex service center in Dallas or NY. If the AD isn’t authorized for anything, they’ll just send it along.

Here’s the list: https://www.rolex.com/en-us/watch-ca...7068052742&z=3

Here’s info on the post service warranty: https://www.rolex.com/watch-care-and...?cmpid=qr-code

Since you asked, the polished photo looks shinier but more rounded, not as sharp edges.

Other than warranty work there are a number of just as good, cheaper places, Rollieworks and LA Watchworks come to mind. Too many stories here of bad RSC jobs, have never heard of that from the two above.

Yes, I can tell the before and after polishing quite easily. However I agree with you that the service is worthwhile and helps spruce up an older watch. I think the main point is that each time you polish the case metal is lost. The case shape gradually loses its crispness. If done well the slight loss is crispness is not noticeable to most owners and certainly far less a concern than numerous micro scratches. However very definitely a watch has a limited number of times that it can be polished - even very professionally - before it starts to look like a bar of soap rather than the distinct crisp case lines of the Oyster case.

Basically if you are not owning a historically significant watch that you are keeping as a long term investment for future generations and instead the watch is a tool for you to use and enjoy over your lifetime, then I don't have a problem with occassional polishing.

Eg. I had a Date 15200 that has been in the family since the 1980s polished by Rolex for the first time a couple of years ago. It came back looking great. (It helped that the micro scratches over the watch's life where very faint and not too numerous).

Argument for no polishing is the nicks on my watch were made/earned by me and remind me I'm using & enjoying my watch, and getting my money's worth.. not some babied bubble wrapped treasure! Just like scars in life..

(Just got my Daytona back from RSC as well, made it clear no polishing for me )

This is very cool! I had a Milgauss serviced a year ago or so and it came back with the same pouch but not a nfc card. But it did come with a card.

Yup - the polish makes'em sparkle. I used my AD for a similar service on my Explorer, but asked that it not be polished. Mine's a five digit, 20 year old piece, and I just couldn't do it. That said, mine has only a few very superficial scratches, and I might have gone the other way if they were more signifincant.

Enjoy your "new" watch!
