47th Street Dealers
My wife and I are looking to venture over to 47th Street and check out some watches that are on display at various grey dealers .
What are some dealers other board members can recommend to go check out? I was looking at Avi and Co, Wrist Aficionado, Sky Diamonds. I’m not going to waste my time currently at the AP and Rolex boutiques. Why go look at empty cases and hear the same story over and over. |

Avi is nice — high end showroom, FYI, they do collect contact info before allowing you in secured area.

motion in time has a huge inventory. honestly just go into any of the stores until you find what you're looking for. they're all pretty good there

Walking down 47th, you can see every make and model! These are from about a year and half ago.

In reality I'd recommend as you do the walk, go into the actual exchanges. You'll find some interesting pieces when you venture inside. The top players are no longer located at street level though, those are ones you need to get appointments with. One correction, Wrist Aficionado is about 15 blocks up from 47th, so for planning purposes take that into account. |

Once I know the exact model I want, then I’ll search online to get the best possible price. We shall see. |

Have purchased several watches on 47th Street. Need to know the market, be clear about your objective, check papers carefully and be quick about it.
My favorite is Gabriel at Watches Off Fifth. Honest, nice fellow. |

You can buy a watch there if you really know the details of the piece and the market price. They can often be competitive, but it takes work.

I guess I’m making an assumption here, but if I’m from PA and buying in NY, I shouldn’t have to pay sales tax on the grey market, correct?
I’ll just voluntarily file and pay Use tax. |

Probably old fashioned, but I don't consider it ethical to try things on when you have no intention of considering their purchase.

I don’t consider the ADs ethical having all these storefronts with empty cases, waiting lists that may or may not exist, bundling watches that no one wants or spending huge $$$ that may or may not boost your odds in getting the model you want. Just my 2 cents. |

That’s the best thing to do. I do the same before purchasing. All 47th St dealers way overcharge for their stock at least 2K-13k. It’s ridiculous!!! Go there use them and bounce!!! Every time I go there I feel dirty of the kind of animals they are when it comes to selling and trying to low ball you for what you wearing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Go there and you won’t feel bad trying on their stuff… most of the dealers I’ve met are very curd and almost like not interested in your business in the first place. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If you act like a gawker who has no knowledge of watches and isn't really interested in buying anything, you will be treated as such. If you make a specific proposal and act like you mean business you will be treated like a legitimate counter party who isn't there wasting time. Don't be afraid to walk away if you aren't close on the deal you want. Don't go to 47th St. looking for vintage watches, and don't try to trade in a vintage watch. Nothing older than 2000. |

I appreciate all the advice and comments.
I will update my experience when I return on Saturday. I'm really looking forward to it. I guess I will know what watch I want, once I put it on my wrist. I'll pursue the desired piece at that point. |
