A. Lange & Sohne Price Appreciation and Value

Was wondering how A. Lange & Sohne watches appreciate through time?

Say one has a Rolex Daytona 116500 vs. A. Lange & Sohne 1815, how would the value of these two watches rise in say 20-30 years?

Rolex Sport watches are very hot right now, predictions for A.Lange?

A. You are comparing a PM watch to a SS watch so not a fair comparison. PM, including rolex loses more value than SS almost always.

B. You are comparing a hugely popular and much more affordable mass produced and mainstream watch to a far more expensive one with limited buyers due to price point. That will have an affect on how many buyers will be competing for it which is what drives prices up.

C. Sports watches (daytona) tend to have better resale than dressier watches (als) as they are generally much more popular

ALS is a far better watch, but any SS Rolex will retain more value.

I love ALS and have owned quite a few over the years but appreciate in price and ALS in same sentence just don't go together.

Who can predict taste and trends in 20-30 years? Buy an ALS to enjoy. Pass it on to the next generation. Its value will be the history and memories associated with the piece, not monetary.
To me, my 1815 is the type of watch I see myself holding onto for 30 years and passing on to my son...more so than my Rolex's.

PJ said they used to give out SS loaner watches when you had a watch in for service. Being as they were the only SS watches from Lange and people didn't like to return them, those probably did.

Good point!

Honestly wasn't trying to pick on Lange, obviously the watches speak for themselves.

There are a few here and there, but rather rare (to be fair can’t think of any brand where there’s significant appreciation across all products).

Off the top of my head the Langematik Anniversary and original PLM have done quite well, and the SS L1s are in a league of their own.

One model I’ve not seen on secondary market is the honey gold L1, but I’m sure if available the price would be insane.

I think the prices of top quality "hot" watches are holding value better than ever, seems to be a real flight to quality. In the UK a used Zeitwerk is only selling at 18% below retail at our biggest dealer, a couple of years ago this would have been 30% plus.

My feelings exactly. I want a Grand 1 or perhaps a Zeitwerk but know it’s not an investment opportunity.

I have owned a dato twice, a grand lange moonphase once, and a zeitwork. I now hold no ALS pieces. I learned my lesson and will not be buying one again. They are beautiful watches, but as an active watch connoisseur, they don't belong in my collection and the losses are too significant- even if you buy right.

My appreciation for Lange increases every day. Rolex is just another beater.

I believe Rolex must be holding a better value over A Lange Sohne. I have a huge appreciation for A Lange Sohne but nothing beats a Rolex in daily rigors and vigorous of life. It can handle anything you can throw it at but when one says A Lange Sohne, my mind automatically is set to handling and treating it nicely

Some special LE's gained, the luminous ones, they sell for quite more than retail, it's the exception...

Sold my Rolex to fund a new 1815 chrono. Although is a great watch, I don’t miss it, probably because way too many people (even taxi drivers, waiters) wear in HK.

My buddy says he got a new Lange 1 (rose gold) in around 2008 or 2009 new, but with a solid discount (maybe 30%). Says he paid under $10k for it. I don't remember the exact price or year. Did the have a huge MSRP increase since then? Seems like L1s go for way more now, in contradiction to the theme of this thread.

I wonder what the price of a 5070P was then and now?

Funny I got a Lange 1 in RG back in 08’ and paid roughly 23k which was 30% off or so. At under 10k he got it for 70%+ off so wow he did really well! Now the AD lost 30% on that deal so they must not be in business any longer losing that much on watches.

I paid $105,000 for my 5070P back then and prices now have moved up nicely.

I obviously got my prices and/or dates wrong. Sorry about that!

Last I read, the L1 SS at auction had gone for 6-figures and the Zeitwerk Phantom (lume and smoke sapphire) go for a substantial premium over their original MSRP (especially since they only made 100)...

I wouldn’t use those two as a gauge or marker for AL&S value retention/appreciation. The SS L1 is rare as it gets with few examples in circulation. The Phantom ZW has been red hot since day 1 and always at a premium unless you were lucky few to get new for retail at AD.
