Do you swim with your gold or bi-metal ?

I am going to a fancy hotel spa with my wife, and I have decided to take my bi-DJ. This would be a first for me, as when I go to swimming holidays, I normally take one of my Doxas or Seikos.

When I am travelling, I only take my watch off to sleep, so would use it in the pool, sauna and steam room.

I am not worried about scratches, and I presume there is no issue with corrosion or water leak. I had a 100m watch before which had a water ingress in a steam room!

Just doing a survey to see who of you would be comfortable with this.

How old is the watch?

You may wish to have it pressure tested before you dunk it in a pool or hot tub

For me Dive watches I take everywhere including steam room for the others pool and seawater.
As mentioned by the one of the other posters, a pressure test is a good idea.

I have in the past but not in years. PM or TT watches are nice but I typically use a Seiko Diver for swimming/sauna, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't contact with chlorine discolor gold?

I typically don't, but did last year while on vacation in Las Vegas. Pool only though. Washed it off at the end of each day.

I've read that chlorine and other chemicals in swimming pools and hot tubs can discolor or corrode gold, but my gold wedding band has remained unblemished through years of regular training in swimming pools. I would not take this as proof that it is safe to wear a gold watch in a pool or hot tub, though. A sauna should be fine.

You should be fine. Make sure to take a pic of it in the pool. Next time I’m in a pool, I’m wearing that same watch.

I do not like watches in a pool. It is too easy to lose track of situational awareness of a watch underwater and splashing around in a pool against the hard sides and railings in a pool. But the water will not harm the watch.

Just a question around whether the temp differential between say a sauna or hot tub and the outside air would cause any problems? I've often wondered this - i have no doubt the case etc. would be ok, but would the moisture plus temp differences cause condensation or something like that?

I’ve taken a Circa 1970s TT DJ down to 30m many, many times. No issues.

I pressure test my watches before a trip just to be sure. You may want to do the same

Do you swim with your gold or bi-metal ?

While I take good care of my watches, I do not baby them (except for my Pepsi meteorite) but I do try and avoid swimming pools or hot tubs with my PM watches. Less so with steel.

I have just seen enough anecdotal evidence that those pool/tub chemicals can affect the gold that I would rather just avoid that situation with PM. Maybe for peace of mind if nothing else.

I'be worn RG and WG in pools, the sea, freshwater lakes, saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs with zero issues.

There is, however, a documented event on this forum where a YG (from memory) and steel TT datejust on jubilee worn in a hot tub came out with the YG significantly discoloured and looking like rose gold.

Rolex Service returned the watch to perfect condition (most likely by reversal of the chemical reaction that caused the discolouration in the first place)

There is no doubt that the hot tub in question had a serious chemical imbalance

This, I remember that thread well. General consensus is it should be okay to take gold into common water features BUT it’s not impossible for tarnish to appear if the chemical balance is wonky.
