I rotate between 3 watches, usually a week or so at a time...Sub-C Date, Exp II Polar, and Panerai 1288. Always get a smile when I put one away and another one on, no more so than the Sub, it's just the perfect, most comfortable watch.

“I don’t care about exclusivity but the fact that it’s so ubiquitous isn’t cool for me.” Sounds like a contradiction.

Everyone knows that every Joe Schmoe has one, which begs the question of why did you even buy it? Btw, making a decision in three weeks seems pretty quick. How about setting it aside for a while, then revisiting the watch?

I’ve realized I’m the working class Joe Schmo everyone talks about on jewelry forums. :D

I'd rather have a 5 digit Sub (perhaps a no-date) - quite a bit more stand-out these days. Everyone has the "new" stuff. Something to consider.

Don't think for a minute that GMT's are any less "ubiquitous". What seems to be ubiquitous is modern Rolex... the older references are far more refreshing and unique, having battle-scars and bespoke patina etc.

I agree most of the time if somebody's wearing a Rolex in the wild it's this watch.
My exact sentiment about the watch

I like a ceramic GMT but the ceramic subs don’t do it for some reason. Much prefer a tool watch sub such as 5513, 14060 or 1680 white or red,16610. For a bit of colour 16610lv and that’s it.
Maybe go to a trusted used Rolex dealer and try on some Proper tool watch subs, perhaps you’ll feel it’s more your thing.

It’s not.

Theoretically like this. If I see <=n people with it on that’s cool. If I see n+1 people with it not cool.

A watch can be neither ubiquitous nor exclusive. For example my DJ41 azzurro blue. I’ve seen other people with it, but not exclusive.

All my watches I’d say aren’t ”exclusive” except for maybe the 15500 among laypeople.

You may want to check your logic.

I’m a sub guy…but that’s me. I currently own most all of the Submariner/SD references, and get what the OP is saying. For ME, 5513, and the 1680’s scratch my itch. Don’t see those references barely at all. With that said, I trust the newer subs/SD in and around water more. I’m Sub drunk.

my sub (non date) least worn one in my collection. Less common than a date one…I like to wear in the summer outdoors.

But I think every collection should have a sub.

Vince, I think your challenge is that you’ve already landed your dream AP so the Sub is just disappointing. Your journey went from the DJ to the RO and now it’s hard to go back to a “basic” Sub since it’s not as special anymore.

I share your sentiment. A one point, there were a few Rolexes I want to add to my collection but after the VCO I stopped looking at them….

Yes, Great point and I’m sure that has something to do with it.

It’s funny though, because I view my DJ as so special compared to the sub. Obviously it’s preference but the all black sub was what didn’t make it special

I sadly agree. Once you cross that chasm it takes a lot to excite us. Changes our yardstick.

I think of it sorta like people. We need to find what is really good about folks and focus on that. Enjoy them for what they are and hope they do the same for me.

The new model is not a classic... maybe the 16610 or the previous one... the new one in 41 mm in addition to being present everywhere you can't distinguish if it is fake or true... the Joe Schmoe as you say can have copies of the Submariner and you will never notice.... nowadays it's better to go for the vintage and exclusive... now if you want to shine in front of everyone you can some AP all in gold so that they see that you really shine... or if you are more discreet a PP 5711.....

EYE ROLL.

“You never saw the Grateful Dead with Pigpen, bro! Therefore, you never saw the Grateful Dead.” The new subs may not be “tool watches” but I highly doubt anyone purchasing a modern Sub cares….they just want a modern, objectively better watch. If they didn’t (and instead cared more about vintage “bragging rights”) they would buy an also WIDELY AVAILABLE 16610.

I will chime in as well. After wearing my new Sub for a few days I began to see just how massively out of proportion it felt. I loved the way the watch felt and looked from the face side but …..
It’s the clasp!
I began to see just how massively out of proportion the clasp looked. Too long and too wide. Looked like it should be on a watch with a mimimum 46mm diameter. Once I noticed this I could not un-see it.

But…..do you have a 16610???!!!

Oh, your Sub sucks then and doesn’t count. Might even be a fake.

If you want to show off you're not going to do it with a 16610, you're going to do it with a 1680 .. in certain places... of course not among people who boast of having the latest fashion!

So why does this line of thinking not seem to hold true for the Pepsi. Every member of this forum sans-Padi is creaming his shorts over the modern Pepsi with its purple/crimson brittle bezel. Many are throwing their hands up and paying 3x retail (lulz).

Seems like with the “Pepsi” folks fork over dough for a hype watch and only then do they *maybe* go vintage. With the Sub it’s vintage or bust.

Odd ducks, you people are.

I would give it some time. Its an icon for a reason. The simplicity, no BS nature of it is what makes it so special. You might learn to appreciate it more and more as time goes on and the other shiny watches start to lose their appeal.

Nope, only discontinued watches are icons around these parts (and the modern Pepsi). He should probably trade his 126610 for a 116610 at a minimum. Then he’ll have a weaker power reserve, blocky odd-shaped case, and a “proven” movement….and he’ll be able to smile and reminisce about the “good old days” when Rolex made manly tool watches meant for beating to hell. And he will forever be ordained an owner of a model for which there is no waitlist, because the only watches that can be bought today from an AD are “just pretty jewelry”.

Sell it. It's a boring watch. I have a 14060m, and I'm considering dumping mine as well if I can't fit a jubilee on it.

People are really choosing violence on this.

OP, if you don’t like it my man, sell it. That’s a lot of money tied up in a watch you don’t love.

Consider vintage. Or something else like Grand Seiko, who are making some very interesting watches these days.
