Home safe or safe deposit box

Hi all.

I just currently bought a heavy duty safe that weighs about 6oolbs and has a 90 minute fire rating. And if the weight wasn't enough, I also had it bolted down to the concrete floor. Just curious on what your thoughts are on leaving my watches in that safe or still taking them to our safe deposit box at the bank if we go out of town?

I have a heavy duty home safe and also a vault at my bank for watches etc.

I’m a safe deposit box kind of guy. I just feel better knowing they’re at my bank vs my home. YMMV

A home vault is superior to these options. Thick concrete walls and thick steel doors with total weights in the 10k pound+ range. Will stop amateurs completely and deter pros due to time needed to break through.

A small sticky note on the vault door saying “may be empty, contents hidden elsewhere” could also be the mental deterrent needed for the determined pro…

Edit: goes without saying a layered approach is best. Security of family first. Material possessions are secondary.

A safe and a safe deposit box are just part of an overall home security plan. The first thing to do is insure your valuables, watches, jewelry, etc. Invest in a quality home security system that includes alarms, motion detectors and cameras. Then ensure that your doors, windows and other access points are hardened to slow or stop intrusion. The specifics will be unique to your home and situation but don't forget that the most valuable thing we need to protect is our family. Good luck and make it happen.

No storage location is 100% secure, but from a purely statistical standpoint a safe deposit box is the safest place to keep valuables. I use a combo of both.

Most safe deposit boxes aren’t that well protected and contents are not insured by the bank. It’s storage. If contents are missing it’s on you.

A good home safe (as you describe), a good security system, insurance, and notify the police for courtesy patrols when you’re on extended absences will cover your assets as well as the bank box.

Ok. I’ve seen a few safes from this company. They were all heavy, but labeled RSC on the data plate.

The details for this model say this

All these security features helped this safe receive the UL Residential Security Container (RSC) Burglary Rating. This safe exceeds the requirements for a California DOJ Firearm Safety Device.

A RSC is not a safe. There’s a big difference.

If it’s not bolted down it’s going somewhere. Thieves will destroy your house getting it out, but they’ll get it out.

The UL RSC Rating is literally that, a rating. Meaning it’s approved for common sale because you otherwise can’t sell it as a consumer good without that rating. Every consumer product has a UL Rating & classification my guy

The description literally says it’s a safe.

AND it says you can bolt it down

This checks all the boxes and is objectively the best solution provided in this thread unless OP wants to build a vault like I did (and also said this originally)

The UL rating is not required for sale. It’s a measure of the burglary resistance. An RSC is not a good rating if you intend to store valuables.

An RSC is not a safe. It’s a security cabinet. It has inferior burglary protection. They are usually heavy due to all the fire resistant plaster inside the safe, not due to their burglar resistance.

Safes will be B class (<1” steel) or C class (>1” steel). The UL rating will classify tool resistance (TL-30 for example) or lack thereof (an RSC 1 is 5 minutes of resistance).

For the OP, a C class safe securely bolted through the floor, into structural elements of the home is very good protection when combined with a good security system. The OP should check the police response time to an alarm and try to double that as a TL rating.

What you need is a real home safe. Look for up rated in the UL tl trx6. Bolt it to the floor and hind it. I ending up going a custom route welding a tltrx6 into a larger one. Hidden and no one will ever find it.
Banks can go under or close them your screwed.

Great deterrent against opportunistic thieves who aren't prepared for a safe or don't have the time or tools to break/drill the safe.

A determined thief with the right tools and time will get in.

Most home robberies are opportunistic, so I think a safe is a good option.

Better yet, use the safe as a red herring while finding another place to sequester valuables, but be careful, thieves know virtually all the hiding places that come readily to mind (and many/most that don't come readily to mind). Obviously you're not protected against fire in this scenario.

It should come down to coverage. If you have better coverage at home than at the bank, there's your answer. Most safe deposit boxes have terrible coverage in the instances for fire, that, or natural disasters.

I live roughly 45 min west of NYC in one of the wealthier pockets of the country but I'm also not far from rougher urban areas (Newark, Irvington, East Orange, Paterson, Jersey City) for the most part my area doesn't see a lot of theft incidents. However, when it does happen it's almost always from people who leave their cars unlocked overnight and/or leave their homes unlocked.

It's nice to live in an area where you can get away with it but if you're basically inviting someone to enter your home, that's on you

Keep your place locked and have a decent way to secure your valuables and you're ok.

Best recommendation is to get insurance. Most insurance companies require certain safes for higher dollar amounts but most will still offer 100-150k insurance in a heavy-duty fireproof safe in the house. The rest you can keep in the bank deposit box. FYI: the banks themselves don't insure their deposit boxes.

For example, you need 200k of watches insured. Your home safe can insure up to 100k and the other 100k will need to be in a deposit box but will still be insured. Yes it costs but it's more than worth the peace of mind.

Feel free to reach out with any questions. Just went through this process myself.

I was thinking about putting a safe room in my home. And then putting my safe in that.
