Submariner - 14060M or 124060?

Hi guys,

I read and posted in this thread, which helped me a lot in my decision.
https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=823630

I had previously a 114060 but never really liked the maxi case. On my wrist that watch just felt wrong so I sold it after a few years and bought a 14060M. Perfect watch for my wirst and have been wearing it with a couple of others for some years now.

But I always lusted for a modern Rolex and when the Submariner 12xxxx came out I believed the corrected all the mistakes of the previous generation.

So this week I finally bought one. But instead of trading I added it.
My thoughts so far:

Cons:
- its huge
- does not wear that comfortable on my wrist

Pros:
- the bezel rotation is a dream
- I love the AR glass coating (inside only)
- Glidelock is great
- overall quality superb

So, what should I do? Thanks!

Post a picture from about 3 feet away in a mirror of the two on your wrist please.

Thanks, added the pictures.
From those I would say I can wear both easily.

From the pictures, both watches suit your wrist well.

I am now firmly in the 5-digit camp, but I had about a 3-year detour wearing mostly 6-digits, including the 114060 and 124060. I also have a thinner wrist than the OP.

For me, I would find myself puked back to the 5-digits every few months. The fit on my wrist, the case shape, the lighter bracelets, and the overall aesthetics all won out for me.

But, these are all personal considerations. It is hard to argue against the beauty of the black cerachrom on the 124060…

You might consider putting the 14060M out of sight and out of mind for as long as you can endure - 1 month, 3 months, 6 months… you will know over time which one calls to you more, as the initial new watch excitement of the 124060 wears away. Time will tell if that’s the keeper or if you miss the 14060 too much.

Also, as per TRF gospel, no harm in owning both!

I would keep both. There is no chance I would sell the 14060M - I kick myself once a day for not buying on in 2010 when they were trading for under $4k like new.

What I would do in your case is put the 124060 (or the 14060M your choice) on a Everest deployment rubber strap so you have (2) completely different looks. Another option would be to put the 14060M on a distressed leather strap (makes it look amazing) and you have 2 completely different looks with the watches. The 6 digit reference is much blingier and louder watch in my opinion and the 5 digit is pure class.

One thing I have learned recently is that the Tudor Black Bay 58 wears very, very, very, very much like the 5 digit reference Sub.

You might want to check one of them out. I love mine!

I love both. No wrong answer. I would choose the 124060 due the maxi dial and hands. Once you dial it in, it’s just as comfortable as any watch I’ve owned.

Thanks for all your answers. Had a Tudor BB58 already.
Cannot say anything bad about the watch, but if you have both then I always chose the Sub.
My grail watch is the YM40 Everose. So this will - hopefully one day - cover the rubber section.

This tells me the 12 is not right for you. I say sell it but wait a month in case your opinion changes and put that money towards something else.

After owning the 39 explorer (same issue), I noticed this…

For me, The modern lugs taper a bit more than its predecessor. Which is great.

however the lugs turn down a bit steeply and result in a visually squared off look (they way the light hits when looking at the watch) that disguises that desired taper.

For that reason my 14060 is not going anywhere.

Ditch the 12 series. Why keep something huge and uncomfortable?

I had one for a few weeks and could not get past the huge clasp, so I got rid of it. 5 digits you can’t go wrong.

Good luck!

Dial, hands, and bracelet point to the 12 for me!

I prefer the modern 6 digit Submariners. The glide lock is worth the price of admission alone. Keep both for now. Put the five digit up for a couple of months and just wear the 12. I would believe after a short time it would become perfect. In the end, you can own both but I doubt I would. Just give the 12 some time and wear and then decide.

I prefer the newer and more modern 124060 in many ways; especially the movement.

12* series without hesitation. 5 series Subs don’t do much for me.

If possible, keep both. They are two watches that can coexist in a collection.
You say 124060 is huge, but it looks perfect on your wrist.

Sample size of one, I've owned the following:

- 5513
- 14060M
- 16610
- 114060
- 124060
- Pelagos
- Pelagos 39

Decided through enjoying each reference what I truly liked. 5 digit Subs and the Pelagos 39.

124060 new from AD is the wisest financial play, 14060/M (two liner preferred) is the better Sub IMO.

Lug holes for the win.

That is my post that you linked … since then, I decided to keep my 14060M, based on all the positive comments to do so … but I still lust after the 12 Series … it’s just perfect in my eyes.

(I did by a 12 Series “Bluesy”, since the post, and sold to a friend my 11 Series “Bluesy”.)

To me, the 12 actually looks to be a better fit on your wrist … not too big at all.

I would see in 6-12 months if you’re just not wearing one them anymore / very often … and then consider trading the one that is being left out … if, you don’t want both.

I know we’re “not supposed to care what other people think” … ;-) … but 99.9% of the people at the table at the restaurant, do Not know that you’re wearing a different watch. The 0.1% is fellow watch enthusiasts.

I’ve unfortunately not owned one (did own a 16610), but I see the 14060M as the ultimate diver to own. Classic styling and lightweight, yet modern enough to not worry about abusing. Great watch.

Do you mean that the 124060 isn’t comfortable as compaired to the 14060M? If so, then it seems like it tilts the decision to the 5 digit reference.

Just simply based off of your pros and cons I would keep the 5 digit. If you feel the new one is too big and uncomfortable, why keep it?

Thank you all for your comments and your votes.
I am already leaning to giving the 124060 away at some point.
I really wanted to like it, you know? But somehow the spark isn’t there.
But let’s see, I will wear it now for some time.

IMO you got it right. I just went through the exact same thing last month. I had both watches in hand and kept my 14060M 2-liner. In the end the 124060 didn't do that much for me. Just seemed too new and ceramic and glossy for me . If you think of your sub as a do it all tool watch and/or like it w/ straps it's the aluminum bezel 14060M all day. If you want a finer and dressier watch that "pops" then the 124060 makes more sense.

I voted for keeping both, but then I saw that you find the 124060 uncomfortable.

I also have a 124060, and my experience was that it took a while and a few trips back to the dealer to get the bracelet dialed in just right. In my case it was really important that the clasp sits right in the middle of the wrist, and I actually had to go back to the store twice to find the "sweet spot", although I had never had such difficulties with having a watch adjusted before that. Now the 124060 is really comfortable, but like I said, it required some work.

But whatever you end up doing, my advice would be not to sell the 14060M. I did, I will never stop regretting it...
