Crown wear

Often times when looking at preowned Rollies I notice that the crown shows quite a bit of wear. The embossed Rolex crown logo is completely worn down and barely visible on some models... and some of these aren't that old. What causes this? Is it just caused from rubbing against the top of the hand?

Crown Wear?

I think on the vintage models I have not noticed that but not on your garden variety Datejust or Day Date, Sub etc. I see scratches or character marks.

I have never seen one that is completely worn down. I bought a 1953 6298, and original crown still looks fine.

Scratches yes, but worn down no.

Here's an example. Notice the Coronet on the crown...

Then again, I thought I read it somewhere that rolex use some serious industrial grade stainless steel thats tougher than regular ones on watches, shouldn't that makes it even more durable?

Maybe its those 18kt gold ones, I mean we all know that gold is softer than steel...

I am confused.

To be perfectly honest, I've never seen a worn crown....even on a very old vintage Rolex....and I've seen quite a few in my lifetime.

I cannot understand how the coronet on the crown can get worn away when that part of the watch is in contact with NOTHING!! So there's really no friction at all, which means there's really very little chance for the solid steel to face any wear and tear.

Gold, on the other hand, may wear down a bit....but, as I've already stated above, that part of the crown is not in contact with any other surface to create friction and resultant wear.
