Daytona Rinsed with Crown Unscrewed

I just rinsed with blue Dawn dish soap under cool tap water my yellow gold 116508 Daytona with the main crown unscrewed. I’ve done the pushed a few times, and that’s not been a big deal, but this is the first time I’ve accidentally done the main crown.
I was drying the watch off when I realized. I haven’t pulled the crown out to the set position. I’ve left it in wind. I took a hair dryer and put it under it with the hot and cool setting for about 3 mins. Not I have it on its back with the crown out.
From what I was reading, I should be fine, right? How long before I can screw the crown in and go back to normal? Or perhaps I’ve really messed up?

Don’t worry, it’ll be fine.
Screw it down any time you like

Give it 24hrs with the crown unscrewed just to be safe. Should be fine. If you swam with it unscrewed that’s another story.

You should be fine but just for future reference, you don’t use a hair dryer as it may push/blow moisture in instead of drying out.
You were correct not to pull the crown out. I would have let the crown open where it was and let the watch sit (crown down on its side) for 24 hours before screwing the crown back in. Then unscrew and set the time a day and use as normal.

It is oke, but do not do this to often.

The gaskets are lubricated with a special teflon type grease Fomblin) to prevent them from drying out and make the gasket slide smoothly over the metal surface of the tube. The detergent will in the end dissolve the grease.
You do not want that. Same applies to detergent with citron acid added to it like many dishwashing soaps.

I would not use Dawn...
Ive heard it will dry the rubber gaskets.
Dawn is used for greasy dishes, Id go for something much more gentle like Dove

Thanks, everyone for the response. I let it sit out with the crown in the winding position for a couple hours with the watch on its back.
I've gone ahead and put the watch in my watch box with the lid closed.
I plan to wear the watch tomorrow back on its regularly scheduled programming.
I won't use a hair dryer again or hopefully make this mistake again.

It will be fine, it’s not under water pressure so water can’t get in

1. The pusher's wing nuts don't make the Daytona waterproof. The pusher seals do.

2. The main crown is trip-lock. You tested one of its 3 features. The other 2 were working safely behind the scenes inside the crown tube.

You are good to go, no worries. And leave the pushers out so you can use your Chrono more often.

Rather than “dial up” position, I would suggest “crown down” position partially buried in a bowl full of uncooked grains of rice.

But as others have said you should be fine.

Unfortunately, I think I cupped my hands where water was all around the case and dial. So not even an inch of submersion, but still not good.

Seriously Paul?

I would suggest plain steamed rice or special fried rice…..chuckle:

Daytona Rinsed with Crown Unscrewed

I did the same thing once and found an article about a Daytona being tested at around a 30m dive with the pushers unscrewed and the watch was fine, some people say as long as the pushers aren’t pressed the watch should be fine. I’ll add this is not recommended.

Do a Google search, unscrewed pushers on Daytona under water you may come across that particular article, you will find some further consensus.

That's correct it was posted on forum by a French dive team, and myself while guiding a party of divers over the reef in the Red Sea, I noticed my crown was unscrewed on my 16600 SD at 25m underwater. But did not panic as the party of divers in my charge were far more important that any watch. On return to surface watch was fine and after well over 600 hours underwater working as a real working tool still fine today after 23 plus years of almost daily use.

Same here. Dawn is a surprisingly brutal cleaner.

For the same reason don't use it on your car, it's too harsh. You'll remove any wax you ever had and leave your finish more vulnerable.

Rolex seals are Viton; Viton has excellent resistance to Dawn and other detergents.

Someone else brought it up earlier - but my first thought was the bag of rice trick. Would that even work??

Not that I want to test it - just curious...

Check out Apple's support page on what to do with a wet iPhone. Search for rice in that page. I suppose the same applies to watches as well.

The possibility of getting dust and rice chaff in the threads of an open crown would be a horrible solution.

@Robf52: It is not about the viton gaskets that will be damaged by the Dawn, is is the grease, the Fomblin that will be dissolved eventually by the Dawn.

Daytona Rinsed with Crown Unscrewed

I did that to my DJ41 too. It turned out okay. One year later, no issues at all. I’m not sure how I did that, since I’m usually so meticulous when it comes to these things. But I remember giving all my watches a bath that day, and it wasn’t running, so I set it, wound it, and then got distracted over something. Phone or doorbell rang, something like that. Sh*t happens.

116508 has a triplock crown meaning three seals protecting against water. When unscrewed you still have two out of three seals protecting your watch insides.

How interesting to hear that directly from you! Must feel great using your watch by putting all that design and craftsmanship to its intended use! I’d love to go diving one day.
