Question about the 5205
Why does the Date window alone have a gold frame around the window? Why not the Day and Month?

Mike, I can only hazard a guess, that it makes that date more of a feature over the other apertures.
Interesting question :)

I suppose so as not to clutter and having the gold frame up against the hour markers wouldn't look good. I find the day and month to be "framed" in the dial - see groove in the dial at the right of the day and left of the month indicator.
More importantly, I am excited to read that you are focusing in on the 5205. Should we be expecting something? or do you just hate this reference? haha

I could guess it's due to the fact that the day/month apertures sit flush against the 10/2 markers. Having the framed would look cluttered, while the date aperture sits alone at 12, which is also naturally a centralized point of reference on any watch.

I think it would look better if it had frames around all three windows. Similar to the 5207.

Ok I've looked at this post several times and am confused. I only see a frame around the date aperture

The frame in the 5960P black dial is not as noticeable as the 5960/1A version, but if you compare it to the other 5960P variants, you'll see that in the blue version, it's like the 5205 where there is no frame at all around the month and day apertures. But in the 5960P black dial, you'll see a thin frame around the day and month apertures. It's very subtle and in the two pics below you can see the difference. Not a big deal to some but it's a detail that I much appreciate in the black dial. |

Serves as the gold chapter at 12 so 12 doesn't get jealous of the other gold chapters.
Or so I've made up in my head... |

Mike, do I note a possible hint, that you are moving away from the 5205? Personally, I had one for nearly three years and though I noticed it. I was not phased by it or asked me to question why! The answers given, seem very plausible

For me Patek's choice makes perfect sense. From an aesthetic point of view there are plenty of marked gold lines on this watch. If they have put a marked gold frame on the date and months - so close to the 11 and 1 o'clock marked gold lines - the watch would have lost beauty in my eyes and been overcrowded with gold frames.
But at that this price range you should stay clear of personal bugs and go for a bug-free watch. |

kind of paying back to the 12 marker, since that the date took the spot for it

Looks like you'll just have to get a 5960 if bugging you that much

totally agree. Usually white is not my jam but this watch I can just stare at for hours. And it really is much more silver in most lights. Thanks buddy.

Go for the 5205 if you like more prominent indices and the 5960/1A if you want the surround on the apertures.

Didn't bother me that much before this thread. But necessary differences in font sizes for days and months in several PP reference windows and letters looking "crowded" bug me. Function of windows and wheel placements. Good that there's choices out there for different tastes.

Never paid any attention to that, but I think it makes the 12 marker more prominent. Date is probably the most important part too.

just seems like there isn't room for the surrounds + i think i prefer it that way, anyway, with the surround around the date blending nicely with, and continuing the motif of, the hour markers. otherwise, it would be too cluttered.
