Rolex Vs. Panerai

I thought I was done with Panerai back in 2014. Sold all those pieces. Too big for my wrist which were difficult to fit under my shirt cuffs. Then the Due model came along, topped with a blue sunburst dial and a titanium case, and I was sold. Eight months later, added the subtle blue OP logo in a “truer” 44mm Luminor case which has “thinned” down by a mm due to its in house movement and snap back case, and now the watch fits nicely under the cuffs. I’m really back for good, and it’s really good to be back.

Still a big Rolex fan but the supply situation for the Rolex SS sports model needs to improve. For now, I’ll rather wait out than pay premiums. For Panerai, I even get to enjoy a good discount on some interesting models.

Good to hear your back! Especially since your back because of the Due line. I really hope Panerai can gain some market share with these new watches that are thinner and are offered in smaller diameters.

Nice pair. I tried on the 676 Due the other day and I really liked it. I loved the thinness of the dial.

That’s why I own them. There is a special kinship among people who wear a Panorai

That's the allure to we Paneristi.
Rolex and Panerai coexist so well together because they are so good with what they do in their design.

I own five Rolex pieces and three Panerai (Radiomir, Radiomir 1940, and Luminor cases). They are just extremely different as others have said. In terms of finish, I'd say the Panerai cases and dial are on par with Rolex to my untrained eye. Something about most Rolex watches coming on very well designed bracelets gives them an edge and makes me feel as though they are certainly better suited for everyday use. The charm of Panerai is the ability to change straps rapidly; but straps also wear far quicker and can make an otherwise perfect case appear older and worn. Panerai are typically most appreciated in 44mm+ case sizes additionally making them less practical for some. That said, the oversized look also makes them better conversation starters and statement pieces. The Panerai brand has (deservedly in my opinion) taken a hit in terms of reputation. I have fallen out of love with them and then about a year ago came back to the brand. With the difficult nature of obtaining stainless steel Rolex references these days, I think people will start to look elsewhere. I don't think Panerai is a bad place to start (along with Omega and IWC).

In the end, Rolex is such a benchmark in classic aesthetics, robustness of manufacture, and brand prestige that they will always form the backbone of any serious collector's collection. I mean even individuals who own multiple Pateks and APs always seem to share time with Rolex pieces. Panerai is quirky, not for everyone, but I think is a worthy brand. They are doing interesting things with case materials (ceramic, DLC, BMG-Tech, Carbotech, etc). They have interesting case designs. They are highly customizable.

My Rolex references and my Speedmaster make up the majority of my weekday wrist time. I put on one of my Panerai when I want to have fun on the weekends.

Don’t have a Panerai but been considering one of the three below in 42mm

Must say the white one in person was fantastic but liked the sandwich dial of the other two.

Would complement this nicely

Thank you GoingPlaces! I’m eyeing another one soon, perhaps a Radiomir Black Seal 8 Days or a Submersible Carbotech. That would nicely round up the Panerai collection.

Thank you also Uppersouth... The Due is just another iteration of the famed Luminor case. I know a Panerai should wear big and bulky. And I respect the views of many Paneristi. But I think that as long as Panerai is still producing the previous Luminor and Radiomir models it has known for, then everything should be ok even with the Due model.

Funny to see this topic come up again. I guess brand comparison is inevitable. I like to live in the realm of both/and vs either/or. As mentioned this is a Rolex forum. With that comes a fair amount if brand loyalty. Rolex makes a fine watch and has a fierce following. I am quite pleased with my Rolex collection. Prior to Rolex I had gone mostly the Panerai route. 4-5 years ago I obtained my first Rolex and within a few years my Panerai collection was mostly gone. But I started again getting back to Panerai and now enjoy a blended collection. With the exception of a 911 I have been piechasing preowned. While the retail price can be quite steep the somewhat softer market has made it much easier to obtain really nice pieces. Combined with a solid Rolex collection and the supply situation it is an ideal time to look at other brands. Why pay thru the nose for a Sub that while is a great watch, is common place when i can pick up a preowned 233 for a fraction of the retail price. Not that I am flipping for profit but the Panerai preowned values are mostly leveled off if you buy smart in the event an adjustment to the collection needs to happen. Both/and is working for me right now. So my very modest Panerai collection feels pretty good.

Rolex and Panerai can’t really be compared to each other because they are more different than similar in so many ways.

If you choose your Panerai carefully, and buy discounted whether from an AD or used, you’ll be fine.

I tend to like the non black dials like the sunburst blue, tobacco and white dials they offer.
